I often write about community 👨👩👧👦 Community is more than people in a geography. It could be those who share common interests, idea, bonds. Community is people. And community is voluntary -- you may fit the criteria... but your participation is optional. The strength of a community can be magnified when stressed. Much like a workout 🏋️♀️stresses the body, but can make one stronger. Recent storms hit the Houston area. After a week, some are still without power. Some have home damage. In Jersey Village -- and I'm sure in other places -- our community got stronger when put to this challenge. Neighbors checked on and helped neighbors. We shared generators. We offered charging stations. Those with power offered our homes & space to friends & fam without. We provided freezer space for those in need. We tried to keep life normal for each other's kids who were out of school for several days. We visited local restaurants who missed a day (and lost perishables) due to power issues. We picked-up yards, helping move downed trees & branches so they could be picked-up. We communicated: face to face, through facebook, and with the local government. We recognized our limitations, but showed appreciation for the level of effort. When at our most helpless -- and when power is out of your control, you ARE helpless -- people became most helpful. That is community. That is community getting stronger.
Following the storms last week a Jersey Village resident needed assistance moving tree debris from their backyard to the curb for pickup. I put out a call for action in our local dads group for help, and the response was incredible. Together, we managed to clear the debris in under 20 minutes. This act of service is a testament to the strong community spirit in Jersey Village, where neighbors are always ready to lend a hand. It's moments like these that reinforce what a fantastic place this is to live. I'm proud and grateful to be part of such a supportive and connected community. #CommunitySpirit #JerseyVillage #NeighborsHelpingNeighbors #LocalGovernment #TCMA #ICMA

The Vermont Department of Economic Development (DED) at the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development (ACCD) is requesting that businesses impacted by the July flooding events complete the DED's Flood Damage Survey for Businesses. This will further aid the relief and recovery response as they seek to capture the type and scale of the flood-related damage businesses suffered in communities throughout the state. Survey data will be used to inform response efforts, allocate resources, and advocate for future relief and recovery programs. The goal is to understand everyone's needs so that relief and recovery efforts are better informed at the community and industry scale. Please note that damage should ALSO be reported to Vermont 211 at Vermont211.org. Completion of this survey does not replicate that Vermont 211 reporting. #AmeriCorps could be on the chopping block? This misguided notion fails the smell test! Who's doing the cost/benefit analysis? As an AmeriCorps alumnus, I cherish my federal service. It put me in a position to serve my local community and take action - with other community members - to tackle real problems. - kaf #community #communitypolicing #publicservice #federalbudget https://lnkd.in/e9iWqQJs

I am curious as to why this is so hard to understand. Yet it is so easy to implement.

Where there's heat, there's heightened risk for fire. 🔥🧯 In response to the Davis Fire, we evaluated the data and found a correlation between the number of extreme heat days and poor air quality in Washoe County (which is often indicative of wildfires). Fire season is challenging for communities and can significantly impact quality of life, especially when it hits so close to home. Bringing the data to light, and perhaps being able to prepare, is key. 📊 United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra , one of our Quality of Life Champion sponsors, has launched an Emergency Assistance Fund to support families displaced by the Davis Fire. As 327,565 U.S. homes are set to lose affordability restrictions by 2026, communities need to act to create and preserve affordable housing. The National Housing Preservation Database (NHPD) is a unique resource in the effort to keep families stably housed and neighborhoods strong. Launched in 2012, the NHPD is today used by thousands of affordable housing stakeholders, including government agencies, community development organizations, legal aid organizations, advocates, researchers, and lower-income families, among others. NHPD's data and research have been cited in more than 100 studies and articles. As the only de-duplicated source of address-level data for nearly 80,000 federally assisted rental properties in the U.S., the NHPD helps users to: - Estimate the supply of affordable homes in a given area and create a needs assessment - Document tangible risks and build a strong affordable housing preservation plan - Target properties for community investment, energy efficiency, and disaster preparedness - Research trends of the affordable housing stock over time - Locate affordable housing options - Identify funding characteristics of properties to provide tenants with legal aid The database is available free of charge to registered non-profits, government agencies, university students and individuals seeking housing. https://lnkd.in/g799YTVS

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." - Matthew 7:24-25 In our mission to provide safe and affordable housing, we at Habitat for Humanity are reminded of the importance of a strong foundation, both in the homes we build and in the lives of those we serve. We believe in not just building houses, but building homes rooted in faith and resilience. Just as a sturdy house withstands the fiercest storms, our commitment to God's teachings empowers us to weather life's challenges with unwavering strength. By providing families with stable housing, we at Habitat not only offer them shelter, but also a foundation upon which they can build brighter futures. Our work is more than just construction; it's about building communities where everyone has a place to call home. Through the unwavering support of our volunteers, donors, and partners, we're able to lay the groundwork for a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Together, let's continue to build on the solid foundation of God's Word and Habitat's mission, ensuring that every family has the opportunity to thrive in a home filled with love, security, and hope. 📍4103 N.
