The “Fair Share” deal continues to demonstrate its value as it helps close the funding gap for the Sewerage and Water Board’s Power Complex. Out of the $17 million allocated to the power plant project by the City Council, $3 million will be Fair Share dollars. Awesome news! I feel that nationwide initiative and necessity for sustainability, and clean energy have encouraged growth of DERs, ESS, EVs, which have created their own challenges. On brighter side, those challenges have also opened avenues in many directions from research, university partnership, infrastructure development/construction, finance, automation, data, AI, machine learning, growth of new business etc. Fast growing demand and numbers in EVs have expedite the process of researching and manufacturing fast charging solutions for EVs. Recently, I am also getting interested in understanding finance and business aspects of utilities and coming across Bipartisan Infrastructure Law a lot! At the same time, many automakers are pulling back on the number of EVs they are producing because of a lack of infrastructure to support these cars. What are your thoughts? We are seeing increased difficulty obtaining power for developments in a reasonable timescale and cost. The DNOs have a duty to ensure their networks are meeting demand and they have a duty to plan to cater for current and future growth. Recent rule changes were designed to reduce cost and make things easier and whereas some like UKPN seem to be embracing this others have a lot to do. Here's an EV Know Before You Go... from May 30th: "The Biden-Harris Administration opened applications today for $1.3 billion funding opportunity for electric vehicle (EV) charging and alternative-fueling infrastructure in urban and rural communities and along designated highways, interstates, and major roadways. This funding opportunity is made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s signature EV charging investments: the $2.5 billion Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program and funds from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program that are set aside for strategic grants to states and local governments to deploy EV chargers. Supported by guidance and technical assistance from the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office), the CFI program is administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and is open to state, regional, Tribal, and local government entities." An initial planned spend of just over $20 million through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will support 32 projects, including four projects in Region 4: Charles E. Fantastic news for Northern Ireland, but also hightlights the need to invest in renewable electricity. NI has a legal obligation to achieve 80% renewable generation by 2030, which means more than doubling the current NI capacity. Some people ask if we are near 50% now why do need so much more... #RenewableElectricity is needed to decarbonise heat and transport. As we transition to fossil free transport, we already need the supply of clean renewable electricity to meet the increased demands. 🚌 🚗 Working together we can achieve these goals. It is better for the Northern Ireland economy, environment and consumer costs.
