From our friends at Nonprofit Quarterly "Making Land Back a Reality: An Urban Indigenous Land Trust Rises in California," featuring the Sogorea Te Land Trust As Corrina Gould states," I think Land Back at this stage is an international movement. We have heard of people giving land back to the Aboriginal movement in Australia. There’s a time when things change in the world. There is consciousness that is built. And it kind of takes off from there." At BLIS, we are committed to growing and supporting the movements for reparations, Land Back, and other transformative social movements. We believe in the power of collective action, narrative change, and the crucial role each individual's contributions play in these larger efforts. However, we recognize that movement participation must go beyond just belief in the movement -- it demands active engagement. This year, we are conducting research to understand the barriers to achieving what we call "Ocean Deep" solidarity and active engagement in transformative movements. From there, as an organization, we'll help movements overcome these barriers. https://lnkd.in/gkX_hSzw

KUA and network leaders connect to the Indigenous Guardians programs around the world. KUA's Kuaaina Advocate Olan Fisher and network leaders Billy Kinney Jr ( Hui Maka'ainana o Makana )and Jerome Kekiwi Jr. ( Na Moku Aupuni O Koolau Hui and theMaui Nui Makai Network )were privileged to contribute to a global gathering and discussion on Indigenous Guardian programs supported by funders like Nia Tero , Resources Legacy Fund , and The Christensen Fund to explore networks Indigenous Guardian Network. Though the closest thing Hawaii has to this is through Hawaii DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources) Makai Watch Program. We believe the state can continue to bolster this program and support greater place based community involvement in management especially in our rural Native Hawaiian communities. We will continue conversations about guardian programs for Hawai'i as Indigeous communities across the world continue to take up the Auamo. https://lnkd.in/gFRigFNY

"Beginning in 2023, NDN Collective will begin dispersing a $50 million Community Trust Fund from the Bush Foundation". The NDN Collective, will disperse $50 Million on behalf of the Bush Foundation to #indigenous communities throughout #minnesota, #northdakota, and #southdakota. The same Bush Foundation was founded by Archibald Bush who made his fortune from 3M a company that helped to create #foreverchemicals and the #pfas industry while he, Archibald Bush, was an executive, which impacts us all including disproportionately #indiancountry. Maybe its just a #coincidence that the Bush Foundation decided to "give" some in #indiancountry $50 Million the same year that 3M has started to settle #foreverchemicals and #pfas lawsuits to the tune of billions of dollars. Maybe not. NDN Collective also according to their Impact Report receives $$ from the McKnight Foundation, founded by William McKnight, who also made his fortune from 3M. #pfas #foreverchemicals #3m #indiancountry #minnesota #northdakota #southdakota #tribe #tribes #tribal #indigenous #indigenouscommunities #tribalcommunities #indiancommunities #greenwashing #coincidence #bushfoundation #mcknightfoundation #ndn #ndncollective #ngo #ngos #litigation #pollution #chemicals #liability #philanthropy #philanthropies #nativephilanthropy #nativegiving #giving #tribalphilanthropy #gives https://lnkd.in/gMu3XbAG

When you read something, you have an interpretation of it. Everyone brings along the lens through which they have lived life, what's happened to them, information they've consumed, and the values that inspire them. We're going to interpret this saying for today as the nonprofits, volunteers, board members, supporters, donors, and those who amplify their work in all kinds of ways as being at the 💚. When we amplify that heart, we see the 🌎 nurtured, the people protected, and the profit being the clean air, water, and land we live on, the adventures we take our families on, the life we dream of for ourselves and our kids. When the entire earth gives, we all win. If you represent a 501c3 that works towards such missions, we invite you to join others in sharing their early interest in participating in Earth Gives Day 2024 - 25 days of inviting people to invest in and engage with all kinds of missions across the spectrum of planet and people protection! (Plan for early September through Oct 1.) https://bit.ly/49zyAIF YOU are welcome! #earthgives #earthgivers #philanthropy #volunteers #climateaction #environment #climatejustice #wildlife

Help us connect you to the Spirit of the Land 🌿 In the heart of Country, we are guardians entrusted with a sacred duty. We are the rangers, guided by the wisdom of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Directors, the Treaty Council, the Sacred Sites Preservation Project, local Elders, and Clans. Together, we are responsible for protecting our environment and nurturing the land that sustains us all. But existential fires rage on, consuming more than just the environment. They devour our history, culture, and connection to this ancient land. The flames grow perenially fiercer, fueled by decades of environmental change, neglect and misguided regulations. Yet, in the face of this devastation, we are not silent. With the voices of truth-tellers like Professor Michael-Shawn Fletcher, we speak out for change. We demand action to restore balance to our ecosystems and revive the art of endemic land management: cool burning practised by our ancestors for generations. Our land and the community suffer. But no longer shall we remain bound by these chains. It is time for a new era of stewardship, where we reclaim our rightful place as custodians of the earth. Join us on this journey of restoration and renewal. Together, we can transition the flames of destruction to the fire of hope and ensure a future where our communities can thrive in harmony with the land and enjoy it responsibly with all the freedoms restored. #communityengagement #volunteers #nonprofit #charity #Spirituality #Reconnect #GrassrootsMovement #Aussie #australian #hiddengems #bushusers #environment #bushfire #IndigenousWisdom #culturalheritage #LandManagement #Sustainability #SacredSites #FirstNations #AboriginalCulture #FireManagement #hiking #Conservation

What specific actions can #grantmakers take to support communities in accessing federal resources to address the climate crisis? At the 2024 Winter #EGABriefing yesterday, we were joined by leaders from across the #movement, #government, and #philanthropy driving transformative investments in climate and community. 🌍 Our esteemed plenary panelists, Adrienne Hollis, VP of Environmental Justice at National Wildlife Federation, Ava Richardson, Director, Baltimore Office of Sustainability, Kacey Wetzel, VP of Programs, Chesapeake Bay Trust, and Charmel Gaulden, CEO of Foundation for Louisiana, dug into how funders can leverage their power to support equitable access to federal funds, while restoring agency to communities. 🔑 Key takeaways: 👉 Exercise your power of being advisors and experts to government funders to build effective partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies to address roadblocks. 👉 Know your problem and use your funder voice to help identify barriers to access that are practices and preferences, versus policies. Many barriers are preferences. 👉 Support community members in attending legislative meetings to determine how dollars are being allocated to specific projects. When a foundation president shows up at the legislature, your presence can be a rallying call to address an issue. 👉 Lean in and listen to the specific community’s needs. #ParticipatoryGrantmaking is one way for communities to lead the decision-making process. Many of our panelists discussed this practice as an effective way to make space for communities at the table, including Baltimore City, which has brought in community organizations to highlight specific funding needs and priorities. 👉 Understand your role to support capacity building at two levels: capacity to intervene at a high level, and to sustain and support networks of communities. 👉 Lean into pool fund work to address these systemic issues. Double down funding on racial equity commitments, and invest in BIPOC-led pro bono legal nonprofits. 📢 “We are the communities that we are trying to help.” #EGAbriefing #EGAconnects #RacialEquity #WomensHistoryMonth

"Civil society organisations are unique partners in their capacity to represent, empower and defend local populations. On World NGO Day, we recognise and celebrate all non-governmental and nonprofit organisations, the people behind them, and the valuable contribution they make to society." - EU Partnerships We couldn't agree more! CEPF was formed to champion #biodiversity by delivering the financial resources of global donors to civil society groups, who then carry out the conservation work themselves. Enabling civil society organizations to participate in, and influence, the conservation of the world's biodiversity hotspots is the hallmark of CEPF's approach. https://lnkd.in/eSXqreGp

We really enjoyed this Nonprofit Quarterly article featuring Black Farmer Fund and Moonsoon Fund! Black and Indigenous communities have historically experienced land theft and dispossession, redlining, and food apartheid, causing a lack of access to healthy and culturally significant foods, among other negative impacts. Instead of reclaiming land in a way that replicates oppressive systems, BFF and Moonsoon are combating land commodification by building pathways to nonextractive investment and collective land ownership. https://lnkd.in/ey7DF4ma

Thriving nature is essential to healthy cities and communities, but nature is not always considered during the planning process. A Greenprint is an innovative science-based conservation planning framework that reveals the values and benefits of nature and nature-based solutions in community planning. While greenprinting has been adopted across the globe, the resources and guidance to create them and streamline their success have not been easily accessible. This is why TNC created the new Greenprint Resource Hub. The Greenprint Resource Hub compiles the guidance, resources, and strategies necessary for developing and launching a greenprint. This site is a treasure trove of knowledge vital for planners, policymakers, and the public to address community challenges through nature-based solutions. Check out the resource hub to discover the benefits of a greenprint, learn the process for scoping and developing a greenprint, and understand the science and data needs as well as the varying approaches to successful community outreach. The hub offers over 95 examples of greenprints from as close as the Bay Area to as far as Chennai, India. https://nature.ly/3UJd0gD
