Apheresis blood donors : 🩸Donors who donate specific components of blood which is required for the patient through a cell separation on an apheresis machine. 🩸Apheresis donation can be either voluntary or replacement. 🩸After whole blood donation , Apheresis donation can be done after 28 days. 🩸Taken into consideration of plateletpheresis , donation can be done 24 times a year. 🩸Minimum weight required for Apheresis donation is 50kgs. 🩸Age limit is 18-60 years of age. 🩸If the individual has taken aspirin or other NSAIDs deferred for 3 days & 14 days deferral for clopidogrel &Ticlopidine if it's platelet donation. #blooddonation #apheresis #transfusionmedicine #bloodcentre

***TODAY IS PKD DAY** On April 30, we celebrate and honor those who have impacted lives by donating blood for individuals with PKD. Let's come together to raise awareness and appreciation for their invaluable support. Individuals with Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency often rely on frequent blood transfusions, starting from infancy. April 30 marks the 120th day of the year, symbolizing the lifespan of a healthy red blood cell - 120 days. Additionally, the bone marrow produces a staggering 120 million red blood cells in just one minute. However, for those with PK Deficiency, red blood cells last only a fraction of that time, from a few days to 2-8 weeks. For example, one organ donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation, and one tissue donor can enhance the lives of up to 75 individuals. 5.Celebration: National Donor Day is not only a day to raise awareness but also to celebrate the donors who have given the gift of life through their donations. As you all start planning your goals/resolutions/intentions for 2024, I want to encourage you to remember how important is to donate blood through Australian Red Cross Lifeblood 🔻 Did you know that one in three Australians will need blood, but only one in 30 people donate it?  🔺 Did you know that you can still donate plasma even if you are not eligible for whole blood donation? (This applies to my Colombian colleagues in Australia!) 🔻 Are you aware that your blood donations can help people with cancer and blood diseases, trauma patients, pregnant women and new mothers live full and healthy lives?  🔺 Every blood donation saves three lives, did you know? I would not have survived my cancer treatment without the several blood transfusions I had (I lost count!) and even though I am no longer eligible to donate blood, I want to help in other ways (i.e. by creating awareness). You can help me spread awareness about this by commenting and sharing my post or just posting something similar on your platforms.

Why Not Just Check? Today, I'm back at Southampton donating platelets—something very close to my heart. Both my aunts, Polly and Liz, were diagnosed with cancer when I was a child. As a child, you feel quite helpless, and not much changes as you get older, except realizing how much more helpless you can feel. But when I discovered I was part of the lucky few who are #GoldBlooded, I was eager to donate as regularly as possible. My blood type is AB+, which means only about 1 in 50 of us have this type. Combine that with the fact that there are only 14,000 platelet donors out of 1.4 million blood donors, and you see the low probability... It all starts with checking! If just one person reads this and checks if they can donate, it will be worth it. A single platelet donation can save the lives of 3 adults or 12 children. I'm fortunate that, due to my size, I can donate a triple each time.
