Last fall, families were promised a streamlined federal student aid application: the Better FAFSA. The results were nothing as promised. “Now is the time to contain the FAFSA fire and establish good practices that support talented students with lower- and moderate-incomes,” write Nicholas A Watson of our education team and Tania LaViolet of The Aspen Institute. 💡The Better FAFSA was meant to simplify the financial aid process, but the reality has been far different. The FAFSA crisis continues to challenge students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. With projections showing that over 70% of American jobs will require postsecondary education by 2031, we can't afford to let this crisis deepen the existing inequities in higher education. In a new op-ed in The Hill, Nicholas A Watson of Bloomberg Philanthropies and our very own Tania LaViolet highlight how colleges can navigate this crisis and support their students. ATI members, like the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, The City University of New York (CUNY), University of Dayton, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Drexel University are leading the way by embracing innovative approaches to financial aid transparency and support, communications, and student support. These colleges have shown that with commitment and creativity, colleges can still widen the doors of opportunity for all students - even amid a financial aid crisis. ❗️Read more about the steps colleges can take to support their students and curb the impact of the FAFSA crisis https://lnkd.in/ecteN6Zq #HigherEd #FAFSA #EducationEquity #StudentSuccess #AmericanTalentInitiative #ATIMembers #FinancialAid The Aspen Institute, Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, Ithaka S+R, National College Attainment Network (NCAN), U.S. Department of Education, The Washington Post, The New York Times

It's essential to recognize the broader implications of the FAFSA issues on higher education access. While Secretary Cardona's efforts to provide prompt solutions are commendable, it's crucial to acknowledge the significant impact this delay will have on families and institutions, even with the best intentions of increasing aid. Student's aid can't be increased if schools don't have the time to process their FAFSA's.... Implications of the FAFSA 2024 Delay include: 📝Heightened Financial Uncertainty for Students 📝Potential Impact on College Acceptance Deadlines 📝Reduced Accessibility to Aid Programs 📝Increased Workload for Financial Aid Offices As David Sheridan aptly noted, "...this isn’t what schools and students need. We need FAFSA’s being processed." https://lnkd.in/ga9aXnQb

“Collectively, I think all schools are willing to sit with families to help them. We just want people to know that the institutions in the community are here, that there are resources here. There’s no shame in picking up the phone and saying I want to choose Alvernia, but I need some help,” says Senior Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, Mary Alice Ozechoski, M.A., regarding the Federal Application For Student Aid changes. Do you know a student who dreams of pursuing higher education? Now is the time for high school seniors and returning college students to submit their 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, an application that students and families need to complete to apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study funds, and loans. The revamped FAFSA form – also known as “Better FAFSA” – takes many students less than 20 minutes to complete and can unlock up to $7,395 in federal aid that does not need to be repaid to help cover the cost of college. Chuck Ambrose, senior education consultant at Husch Blackwell, and Michael Nietzel share insights on how the mishandled rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) could be disastrous for already struggling colleges. Facing the fallout from the pandemic, inflation, and questions about the value of a degree, colleges now grapple with a sharp decline in FAFSA completions, which could lead to significant enrollment drops this Fall. Will this be the final blow for some institutions? Read the Inside Higher Ed article to find out: https://lnkd.in/gvwc9H68 #HigherEd #collegeenrollment #collegestudents

2moTrue. Bloomberg Philanthropies have several valid points. My bigger concern disabled students are left outside of options. Case management no longer functions for any disabled situation. Biggest cost reduction upon failure will be case management process. Yet funding negated. Students need guidance counseling. What do we slash funding from immediately upon budget cuts the fat which are considered counselors. No guidance expect no workforce tomorrow. Global demand employees find employment unless jobs promised are replaced by AI as demonstrated by replacements of accountants. Why study 13 years of accountancy to be replaced by a computer programmer writing code? I did study accountancy finished my 13 years of study. I will just stay retired. FASFA submission says wonderful things. School applied most recently would not accept walking in door or schedule appointment for intake. Offered scholarship, $7,500 in grant funds, and additional assistance in loans to cover all costs. School did not want me as student. Ergo no point in filing for FAFSA even if qualified. Other schools may reject students. Until students are the treasure wanted by schools I doubt FAFSA will fix much. Great service for those students who can be accepted.
