🤝 Where Germany's startup network comes together: The EXIST workshops in Cologne 🤝 Two days full of exchanging ideas and best-practice approaches from startup consulting are over. We are of course talking about the EXIST workshops in Cologne powered by EXIST - Existenzgründungen aus der Wissenschaft. A total of 8 successful workshop sessions, exciting keynote speeches (new format!) and an open-ended evening event to get to know each other personally strengthened the start-up network between university representatives, consultants and industry experts. 🚀 The EXIST workshops: ☝️ Day 1: Workshops on "The Universities and Startup Hubs - empower and connect the German Startup Scene" In four sessions, new forms of cooperation and support structures for AI hubs were among the topics discussed in small groups. Our Project Lead Arthur Erdmann presented the best practices of the AI.STARTUP.HUB Hamburg together with Harald Kratel during the first workshop day. 🎉 ✌️ Day 2: Workshops on "The Founders & Startups - from innovative ideas to going global" In another four sessions, for example, the role of universities in relation to international scale was examined and funding instruments for startups were discussed. After the sessions, the results were presented in a flashlight format. Swarm intelligence is just a great thing, as was shown once again! 🫶 Many thanks to the organizers, especially to the University of Cologne and Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Academia spin-out startups are a high-risk, high-reward game. The Israeli academia is full of unbelievable talent that develops groundbreaking technology. In some cases, the fastest, most efficient way to bring this technology to the world is by starting a startup. Working closely with researchers and spin-out startups taught me valuable lessons I would love to share: 1.  Sector Matters – Deep tech startup in a large and growing market that is striving for innovation is a recipe for success; In other cases, you may find that the market is satisfied with the solution it already has. 2. Maturity – The academia today is open to the world. Researchers are collaborating with large companies, validating the technology, and even generating initial revenues. The challenge often lies in scalability, not in science. 3. Leverage Your Institution – Your academic institution can be a valuable partner, offering resources from facilities to talent. Remember your success is their success too. 4. Path Dependency – The first steps in a spin-out startup are crucial and irreversible. Partnering with the right founding team and targeting the right market are two of the most important decisions you will make – and they both happen right at the start. 5. Enjoy the journey – Startups are a rollercoaster ride.
