One of my favorite people on one of my (newer) favorite podcasts. Y’all have to give this a listen. It’s critical that we use doctrine as a jumping off point and think, try, write about how it applies in various situations. I would offer the idea of battle networks (https://lnkd.in/ezX-byrF) as a framework to think about who needs to be in the nodes (hint: not all warfighting functions or Napoleonic staff members)

This was very insightful and a well crafted addition to the maneuver warfare conversation. My thoughts continue to evolve. Some things I’ve been considering lately are: 1. The foundation is canonical text. It’s basically “warfare theory cliff notes”. You have to read the full texts to have a deeper understanding. 2. It’s called MCDP 1 “Warfighting” and should inculcate the understanding of foundational elements of war. It’s not MCDP 1 “how to be a maneuverist”. 3. Maneuver is indefensible, and in fact there are examples of how a successful maneuverist approach caused larger strategic problems. 4. Maneuver approach is better thought of as indirect approach and applicable more in operational art than tactical action . There are plenty of historical examples here. 5. Any updates should include naval theorists like Mahan and Hughes as well as understanding newer domains. 6. Updates should not try to shoehorn any capabilities to include cyber or information warfare. Those are appropriately captured in other doctrine. MCDP 8 comes to mind. 7. Updates could include joint or coalition considerations. There are examples pre Goldwater-Nicholls. But there is also doctrine that covers these. .
