This past weekend one of our key suppliers posted this event they took part in upping their game in our minds as the truly sustainable brand that we love to have in our stock as a premier brand. Not only do they make a brand with purpose in mind, Sustainability, they also walk the talk in their company culture. The snow was still falling in a swirl in Calgary yesterday and today the sun is bright and clear in our skies. For Canada, this time of year means, crazy weather, new growth, the grass gets green, tulips pop, and river cleanups! Community spring clean-up events are fantastic opportunities for neighbours to come together and improve the appearance and livability of their neighbourhoods. They promote a sense of civic pride and unity while making tangible improvements to the local environment. Spring clean-ups also serve as a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and encourage individuals to take responsibility for keeping their communities clean and beautiful. The outfit of the day can look like this: thick soled boots, long pants, a long sleeve shirt, lots of garbage bags, ball caps and community spirit. A new community-driven movement, the 'Sweep, Sweep' campaign, is inspiring individuals across the United States to take action for a cleaner and healthier planet, starting in their own neighborhoods. Co-created by Eva Almeida, Audrey Star, SK Cummings, and Sk Almeida, the initiative emphasizes that individual responsibility plays a crucial role in safeguarding the environment. 'If we want to save our planet, we need to start with our cities. Every effort counts,' explained Audrey Star, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry and a passionate advocate for sustainability. Through volunteer clean-up events, educational workshops, and a robust social media presence, the 'Sweep, Sweep' campaign encourages citizens to unite and preserve the beauty and well-being of their local surroundings. The initiative aims to build stronger, more connected communities while promoting urban cleanliness and environmental preservation. Why are we celebrating #WorldOceansDay on The Underline? 💚🌊 Even though we are not directly on the ocean, The Underline begins at the River Room, which is located on the Miami River. From there, you might even catch a glimpse of our local friend, the manatee! The Miami River connects to Biscayne Bay, making it crucial to keep the river healthy for the animals that call it home and for the bay it feeds into. Our efforts to preserve the Miami River ultimately impact the health of our oceans. How do we support our oceans? One significant way we can support the ocean at The Underline is by using our trash and recycling receptacles. Proper disposal of garbage and recyclables ensures they do not end up in the river and, eventually, the ocean. Additionally, many natural features on The Underline help maintain the health of our waterways. This includes bioswales that filter and manage stormwater before runoff with debris ends up in the Miami River. This filtered water supports our native environment, recharges groundwater, and helps create a greener Miami. The CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is now accepting proposals for the State’s Recreational Trails Program Grants. Applications will be accepted through March 11, 2024, for the $10M available to improve Connecticut’s trail infrastructure. Trails have seen significant usage increases since the onset of the pandemic as more residents and visitors become familiar with 2,500+ miles of multi-use trails and greenways that crisscross the state. It’s no secret that low-income communities and communities of color across the U.S. are hit hardest by the effects of climate change, from extreme heat to flooding and poor air quality. In response, more and more of these communities are turning to green infrastructure to help tackle both climate and public health challenges head-on. ✅ While residents are eager for more parks, green spaces, and safe places to play, many residents are rightfully concerned about the risks of displacement and gentrification that can come from greening neighborhoods. ✅ Here’s the deal: Greening projects do not have to lead to displacement if they incorporate equitable development practices and policies!
