Maternal care is a national health crisis in the United States warranting increased focus on improving quality, safety and cost of care for mothers and infants. Premier consistently looks for ways to collaborate with hospitals and health systems to improve quality, safety and cost of care for mothers and infants. "Every day across the U.S., the healthcare community has an opportunity to positively impact the lives of mothers, babies, families and communities. Redesigning our care processes to achieve health that is inclusive of behavioral, physical and social needs is the work that our Premier Perinatal Improvement Collaborative focuses on with committed colleagues across the U.S. It takes all of us, every day, to move forward together." - Sue Leavitt Gullo, Principal, Women and Infants Service Line, Premier Inc. Today is Maternal Health Awareness Day! OHA's maternal health initiative is focused on improving maternal health outcomes across Ohio. OHA and ODH are leading statewide implementation of a national quality improvement program organized by the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health, or AIM, to advance effective practices and outcomes for maternal health in Ohio. The OHA team is working with member maternity hospitals to collect data to support implementation of the AIM bundle for obstetric hemorrhage. OHA is also supporting the Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative’s Compassionate, Accountable, Respectful and Equitable Care Project, or CARE in data collection. 👏 👏 👏 Healthcare providers, health systems, medical groups, and payors all have a role to play when it comes to fixing maternal health care in the U.S. Technology can bring us together and help create a safer, more communal approach to maternity care. Let’s not let the legacy of traditional healthcare silos get in the way. #DCSafeBabiesSafeMoms #maternalhealth #advancinghealth #MedStarHealthProud
Why is it that our system focuses on just part of what is needed to secure good maternal health outcomes? The US spends nearly 18% percent of its GDP on health care. Yet the healthcare system is largely designed to attend to clinical variables, which impact only 20 percent of county-level variation in health outcomes. In contrast, SDoH affect as much as 50 percent. So, how did we end up here? Loral Patchen, PhD, MSN, MA, CNM, IBCLC of MedStar Health & Anish Sebastian discuss the issues confronting maternal health, and the opportunity to deliver better outcomes through a system that addresses ALL the needs of pregnant women. https://hubs.li/Q02j9lct0

We're drawing inspiration from an unexpected source to address the challenges in maternal healthcare—Elephants 🐘 In nature, elephants set a powerful example with their communal birthing process, where the labouring elephant is surrounded and protected by the females of the herd. This approach echoes the belief that the journey to motherhood requires communal support, something often lacking in our fragmented healthcare system. Mother Goose Health is borrowing lessons from elephants to transform maternal healthcare. 🐣 Much like an elephant herd, they strive to shield mothers from the pitfalls of limited or non-existent maternal care services, thereby reducing the risk of pregnancy-related complications. They aid in expediting risk identification, facilitating timely access to treatment, and coordinating comprehensive care to improve health outcomes. A communal approach to maternal healthcare, like our friends, the elephants. 🙌 🐘 💙 #MaternalHealth #HealthcareInnovation

🧑🍼 Maternal Health Organizations Need Better Access to Resources Community-based organizations (CBOs) across the United States provide safe and culturally appropriate health care for underserved patients, including prenatal and maternal health services. But despite the critical role they play, CBOs often find it challenging to apply for and receive federal funding. On To the Point, experts from The Commonwealth Fund and Yale University report on findings from interviews with leaders and staff at six maternal health CBOs and make recommendations for better connecting with federal funding. Streamlining application processes and providing tailored technical assistance are among them. “To achieve maternal health equity, CBOs require accessible funding that recognizes their contributions and subsidization of government and health system deficiencies,” the authors, Laurie Zephyrin, Sarah Christie, Sakinah Carter Suttiratana, and Mikaili Charlemagne write.

Mapping the human experience to improve the health care system. Entrepreneur | Listener | Advocate | CEO | Friend, wife, mom, woman
* 🔥 NEW MATERNAL HEALTH RESOURCE ALERT 🔥 * Improving the postpartum experience for all women requires a comprehensive approach across the health care ecosystem. Check out our new resource mapping the multitude of policy priorities for postpartum care. We must do better for women and families and this document shows the multitude of ways organizations and leaders are doing just that. So many diverse stakeholders, including health care providers, community organizations, advocates, policymakers, and more, are working to improve maternal health care. Each brings a unique lens and perspective and addresses and improves different facets of the perinatal experience. However, without a comprehensive mapping of the **postpartum care ecosystem,** efforts to improve postpartum care may be fragmented and lead to duplicated efforts, inefficient resource allocation, and missed opportunities for collaboration. Recognizing this gap in the research, United States of Care led the effort to map, for the first time, the **organizational landscape and postpartum-related policy priorities**. Link below and let us know what you think!
