A victory for #electricvehicles, the #InflationReductionAct has invested $1.7 billion in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program. These dollars will bolster the supply chain for #electricvehicles and parts and create and sustain good union jobs in manufacturing communities across the country. 🌿🚗 Read our statement here. https://lnkd.in/g9M2W5bC #UAW #USW #goodjobs

With deep roots in the American energy network, we are spotlighting the NEMA-led coalition's effort to secure bipartisan support for pivotal legislation around our nation's distribution transformer supply chain. 🔌 Utilities, labor units, and coalition members are joining forces to rally for S. 3627, a legislative initiative that reinforces maintaining U.S. capabilities to produce high-quality transformers. 🇺🇸 This is not just about energy; it's about our national security and economic stability. The current DOE proposal necessitates an unnerving shift from grain oriented electrical steel to amorphous steel. This shift might offer marginal efficiency gains, yet it threatens to jolt an already-strained supply chain further—where order wait times exceed two years. S. 3627 brings a well-drafted alternative to the table: sensible efficiency standards, supply chain certainty for domestic manufacturers, and crucial lead times for adapting new manufacturing protocols. What's more, it aims to ease the recurring supply disruptions by setting future-proof efficiency regulations. Rallying behind this initiative is essential, as it represents a decisive step in ensuring our nation's energy resilience, economic vitality, and the safeguarding of our infrastructure. Government Action Needed to Address High Energy Costs in Steel… The disparity in electricity costs has long put UK companies at a disadvantage compared to our European neighbours. In spring 2024, British businesses were paying nearly double the electricity prices of their counterparts in France and Spain which puts British industry at a competitive disadvantage. This will be exacerbated as the Steel industry migrates to electrically intensive steel making processes. With the UK general election over, the new government’s commitment to the steel industry, championing a robust deal and pledging £3 billion in subsidies, aimed at safeguarding the steel industry in the UK is a promising step. This support is crucial as companies like Tata Steel and British Steel transition away from traditional blast furnaces to cleaner electric arc furnaces. While the closure of blast furnaces at Port Talbot and the resulting job losses are tough pills to swallow, the long-term vision of a greener and more competitive steel industry offers a brighter future, whilst retaining the production of high-quality steel for markets such as Automotive. As the new government navigates these challenges, the focus must remain on balancing the immediate impact on jobs with the long-term benefits of sustainable industry practices. Ensuring competitive energy prices will be key to levelling the playing field and enabling UK industries to thrive in a greener, more sustainable economy. iconsys supports our customers through their decarbonisation process with microgrid upgrades including battery energy storage systems (BESS) and renewable energy resources. We will stay engaged and supportive of these critical transitions. Together, we can foster a resilient and forward-thinking industrial landscape in the UK. #teamiconsys

A gap has appeared between Britain and Europe’s #ElectricVehicle sales over the past year, according to Cornwall Insight analysts. Between July 2022 and 2023, the number of #BatteryElectricVehicles sold in European Union nations grew by 60.6%, compared to a more moderate 31% in the UK. High #inflation and #energy prices, alongside scaled-back incentives in the UK compared to other major European nations held back sales, the consultancy said in a report. A lack of infrastructure also acted as a barrier, the report continued, with just one publically available charge point for every 11.3 #ElectricVehicles in the UK. Analysts warned the UK’s delay to ban the sale of new #petrol and #diesel vehicles could hinder the UK’s transition to electric vehicles too, after rules were pushed back last week. "Addressing supply chain constraints, bolstering manufacturing and investing in skilled labour are needed to decarbonise the electricity system at pace and scale. Effective policies will scale up delivery, foster economic growth and enhance energy security." - Dervilla Mitchell CBE FREng, chair of the fifth roundtable. A whole systems approach is required to achieve the 2035 target of decarbonising the electricity system in Great Britain. To feed into the government's ongoing work on a delivery plan, our National Engineering Policy Centre has been hosting a series of roundtable discussions, each convened with senior representatives from industry, academia and government. The fifth roundtable, held in January 2024, explored what contracting and procurement models, industry capacities, and skills were needed to deliver decarbonisation of the electricity system by 2035. It asked how to procure major works sustainably, and what strategies would be needed to secure the industrial capacities and supply chains needed at pace in the short-term and maintain them for the long-term. It also examined how to close the skills gap and address short-term and long-term regional needs for a robust and active skills pipeline. Read our newly published report of the discussion, which summarises the key themes and takeaway messages, and explore more of our work on decarbonising the grid at: https://lnkd.in/eKp6f_xn #EngineeringZero #ElectricitySystem #Decarbonisation #NetZero #Skills #IndustrialStrategy
