A few weeks ago, we teamed up with Cooley LLP to host a Women’s Breakfast as part of the 2024 Future-of-Food Week by World Business Chicago programming! The energy was incredible, and it was inspiring to see so many women in the investing & food ecosystem connect. We’re so grateful to Alya Adamany Woods and the whole Cooley LLP team for co-hosting with us and World Business Chicago for planning Future of Food Week.

ICYMI: The third edition of FoodCorps’ annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Report is here! The past year was an important one for FoodCorps’ equity work. It marked the first time our entire staff gathered in person since our 2019 retreat, a pivotal moment for confronting the history of inequity in our organization. The 2022-2023 school year also brought about our identity as a justice organization, a new approach to anti-racism work, and new organizational values. During times of transition, it’s particularly important for us to remain grounded in our commitment to DEI—not merely because it is the right thing to do, but because it makes us better at what we do. Our impact is greater, our vision is clearer, and our movement is more sustainable when we approach this work with justice as a call to heed, not a box to check. This report is just one snapshot of our round-the-clock work to become the type of organization we’d like to see in the world. We know we do not have all the answers, and neither can one report contain all of our efforts—and missteps—in our DEI journey. That’s why it remains critical for us to be as transparent as we can about this work all year long, and to hold ourselves accountable to our communities, our partners, and you. This week has been a doozy: 👉🏽 A Texas federal judge ordered 55 year old Minority Business Development Agency to open to all races. The judge ruled that MBDA's presumption that businesses owned by Blacks, Latinos and other minorities are disadvantaged violated the Constitution's guarantee of equal protection. I know first hand that minority owned businesses, especially Black-owned businesses are disadvantaged and these types of services help. https://lnkd.in/eXt-iQth 👉🏽 The chief diversity officer at Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dr. Sherita Golden, stepped down over backlash from an email newsletter that explained the concept of privilege. Her explanation of privilege was spot on. https://lnkd.in/eChUuWG5 👉🏽 A new bill was filed in the Missouri house that would make it a felony for teachers or school counselors to provide students with support around the social transitioning of a transgender minor. This support could be "material, information or other resources". The proposed law would also have an offender placed on the sexual offender registry. https://lnkd.in/enmnNgQy We must continue to fight for diversity, equity, inclusion and justice FOR ALL. Organization leaders, this is not the time to be silent. One way you can show your commitment to DEI and YOUR EMPLOYEES is by continuing to invest in efforts that support dismantling unjust and inequitable systems. I hope you will consider supporting The Winters Group, Inc.'s Racial Justice at Work Summit! #diversity #diversityequityinclusion #racialjustice #conference

There’s some major news happening in the feminine care world! The Honey Pot Company, a New Voices Fund portfolio company, is making history once again with a landmark $380 million partnership deal with Compass Diversified, one of the nation's largest publicly traded holding companies. The deal is expected to close in February, and aims to help democratize the brand’s approach to ‘normalize the normal.’ The New Voices Fund spoke about the disparities of female entrepreneurs at the 2018 ESSENCE Festival of Culture, saying, “The facts about investments in women of color entrepreneurs, particularly Black women, are astonishing.” The Honey Pot Co.’s Co-Founder, Beatrice Dixon, who will continue to lead as CEO and Chief Innovation Officer told the press, “I hope that beyond the headlines and quotes, the knowledge prevails — no matter where you are and what you do, who you have been and who you think you have to be, you can always begin somewhere.” To read more about this game-changing deal click the link below! https://lnkd.in/g_Q4uava

Psyched that I've been selected by The Aspen Institute to participate in one of their writing for tech policy courses! My proposal was based on my recent talks and workshops on generative AI and the creative industries, and how we need policy interventions to support these workers as their industries transform. If we've worked together before, chances are you know about my passion for developing and improving internal policies (to streamline processes, to build understanding, to retain staff, etc). While I've advised parliament before, it will be cool to learn more specifically about how my expertise in the creative industries can be transferred to build more equitable livelihoods for creatives on a broader scale!

“Life-transforming ideas have always come to me through books.” - Bell Hooks Recently, I read three books that were different yet similar. I’m sharing my views on them, and I’d love to know if you have read any of these books. Maybe we can discuss or share our learnings. 📚 Think Again by Adam Grant pushes readers to challenge their own biases and rethink ingrained assumptions. It talks about the need for open-mindedness and adaptability, critical for building truly inclusive environments. This book is a decent guide for those dedicated to creating lasting change through equity. 📚 Seeing Like a Feminist by Nivedita Menon provides a critical examination of how power, patriarchy, caste, and queer identities intersect to shape societal norms. It challenges entrenched beliefs and urges readers to rethink systems that sustain inequality. This book is a thoughtful, comprehensive exploration of feminism, essential for anyone seeking to understand the complexity of social justice. 📚 Poonachi by Perumal Murugan is a heartwarming tale that resonates with the themes of Animal Farm, yet stands apart in its own unique narrative. It follows the story of a goat named Poonachi and the elderly family that raises her, capturing the struggles faced by villagers. The book poignantly illustrates how climate challenges and bureaucratic hurdles complicate their lives. It’s a simple yet deeply touching story, evoking empathy and highlighting the family's constant fear of losing Poonachi and disappointing the man who entrusted her to them. This emotional connection makes it a compelling read for anyone interested in the intersection of animal welfare and human resilience. PS: my partner almost turned vegan after reading it :D Currently reading: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Nell Scovell and Sheryl Sandberg, and it looks like a very promising book. 📕 ———————————— The image includes embedded alt text. #Poonachi #Feminist #ThingAgain #Books
