Did you know that The Women & Girls Index shows that nearly 50,000 organizations in the U.S. are dedicated to women and girls, yet they consistently receive less than 2% of all charitable giving, according to research by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute (WPI)? Yes, you are reading that right - only 2% of charitable giving. Today, October 11th, is #GiveToWomenAndGirls - an effort that began last year to increase funding for women’s and girls’ organizations. In recognition of today, I'll be making donations to several organizations in town that are dedicated to women and girls. I hope you will considering joining me! - Woman to Woman Mentoring: provides free mentoring services to women ages 18 to 60 - Girls on the Run of Mid & Western Maryland: a life-changing, character development program for girls in 3rd - 8th grade. - Black Mamas Building Bridges: bringing awareness and action to the fact that Black Women are DYING to give birth and working to save lives. As I say often...when women thrive, families thrive. And when families thrive, communities thrive. Please consider supporting these or other women and girls organizations today.

I'm over the moon to announce that Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs ("WLC") has received a $900,000 gift from MacKenzie Scott! This is the single largest donation in WLC’s 55-year-old history. Situated in the nation’s capital, WLC is on the cutting edge of #civilrights battles that affect communities across the country. Our key focus areas include #educationequity, #disabilityjustice, #fairhousing, #workersrights, #immigrantrights and criminal legal system reform. We celebrate MacKenzie Scott’s recognition of #civilrights litigation as an essential tool in the fight for #racialequity. With this transformational gift, we will deepen our partnerships with low-income communities of color to advance #racialjustice. Together, we will strive to dismantle systems of racial oppression and to pursue lasting change in the Washington, DC region and the nation. The gift coincides with the launch of our #strategicplanning process. WLC will leverage this gift to raise another $1 million dollars in 2024 to: * Make fair housing a reality by preserving affordable housing, fighting for safe habitable housing, and opening doors to housing for returning citizens * Promote economic justice by fighting for education equity for students with disabilities, winning back stolen wages for workers subjected to wage theft, protecting workers subjected to harassment or discrimination * Reform our criminal legal system by ending police brutality, halting abusive prison practices, promoting decarceration, and supporting reentry for returning citizens Whether we’re running #workersrights clinics or representing prisoners subjected to abuse or suing white supremacists for attacking a Black church – the WLC uses every tool in the toolbox to eradicate systemic racial oppression. Our mission is to create a more just, inclusive, and equitable society. And our mission has never felt more urgent – as we gear up for a monumental election year in 2024, for Washington, DC, and the nation.
Exciting News! The Washington Lawyers’ Committee receives a historic $900K gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott through Yield Giving. This monumental donation marks a new chapter in our 55-year history, empowering us to deepen our racial justice work across Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. Let's make lasting change together!
