Today, 10th of September, is observed worldwide as the World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a day when we remind ourselves of our duty to prevent suicides. It is also a day to raise awareness that we can do this together. All we need to do is to be vigilant and focus our efforts on directing treatment to those who need it the most. Also, remember those affected by suicide. 🙏🏻 As a community, we need to support those impacted by suicide by addressing the needs of survivors, whether they are family, friends, or communities. World Suicide Prevention Day may not be marked in every person's calendar, but for some of us it is a day of remembrance, reflection and action. This year the theme is Change the Narrative - how might we see our stories in other ways - this resonates for me as a person who has been bereaved many times by suicide, and who was able to survive my own suicidal crisis. When we change the narrative, the person in pain finds comfort and peace. The person seeking help, finds compassion. The person unsure of how to support another, finds confidence. The person devastated by loss finds community and connection. The worker, volunteer, shopkeeper, hairdresser, teacher or mate, responds to a person in crisis and is able to listen. Changing the Narrative is not just about people like me, it takes a compassionate community to make lasting change to value and save lives. Today is a day for asking ourselves how we contribute to that change. #WSPD #Bethechangeyouwanttosee #livedexperience

As we enter September I want to bring light to an issue close and personal to my heart. September is Suicide Prevention Month. Talking about suicide is never easy but it is necessary to end the stigma surrounding such an important topic and issue. Many of us know someone impacted by suicide or maybe we have struggled ourselves. Those who are impacted often feel alone and feel that there is no one to help them. However, there are so many resources and supports out there that people can benefit from. The best thing you can do if you know someone who is struggling is to show them kindness NOT judgment. You can also provide them with resources that may save their life. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. The stigma surrounding suicide only hurts those who are struggling.
