Adults with learning difficulties are being moved out of their homes against their wills - with some ending up in secure accommodation. Around forty "villages" have been shut down over the past few years and many residents face problems finding suitable housing. Campaigners say adults with learning difficulties and their families are not being listened to. In this conversation, journalist Angela Walker speaks with Ron Brown from the charity Our Life, Our Choice about the pressing need for more choice and better accommodation options for adults with learning disabilities. They discuss the challenges faced by individuals in finding suitable living arrangements, the role of regulatory bodies, and the importance of advocacy and community involvement in ensuring that the voices of those affected are heard. 50% of foster kids are in 5% of U.S. counties. While children of all races are affected by the foster care system, Black children are disproportionately represented and face significant disparities in treatment and outcomes. These children are at a higher risk for negative outcomes later in life due to systemic issues and societal factors. Our Empower Every Community initiative focuses on addressing these critical issues by empowering local churches to take meaningful action. Churches, deeply embedded in their communities and trusted by their members, are uniquely positioned to help reverse racial disproportionality and improve outcomes for all families. Through research, we’ve identified 2,009 “Crux Codes”—specific zip codes where local churches can have a transformative impact. By leveraging the trust and relationships these churches have, we aim to reduce the number of children entering foster care and strengthen families through community-based Care-Sharing. Together, we can address the disparities in the child welfare system and create a more equitable and supportive environment for vulnerable children and families. https://lnkd.in/gjs9CG_7

It can take some time for children to feel at home in a new place. It can help to remind children that they matter, and that they are important, and that they are not alone. Here are some things you might consider telling children often: • I’m listening. It is brave to ask for help. • You are an important part of your new community. • The sad or scary things that happened before are not your fault. • All your feelings are okay. I can help you talk about them, so they don’t feel so big. For more ideas on what to say to children adjusting to a new place, and for more resources related to foster care and belonging, visit: https://lnkd.in/ewQRDJWG #Resources
