Anti-fouling agents in bioreactors although important to prevent membrane fouling can have negative effects on cultures. A recent study describes a new online monitoring system that allows to assess the stress experienced by algae due to anti-fouling agents in real time. The system automatically measures chlorophyll a fluorescence using an ultra-sensitive sensor. The system's application goes beyond biotechnological application. It can also be used to determine environmental effects of anti-fouling paints on aquatic organisms and help develop environmentally friendly anti-fouling paints that protect ship hulls while having minimised environmental impacts. 👏 Huge congratulations to Diego Alejandro Hernández on his latest publication in Chemosphere titled "New perspectives on the anaerobic degradation of BTEX: Mechanisms, pathways, and intermediates." This study sheds light on advanced mechanisms in BTEX biodegradation, offering valuable insights for environmental bioremediation. Highlights of the paper: 🌟 Fumarate addition emerges as an alternative activation step for ethylbenzene biodegradation. 🌟 Benzyl alcohol and cresol serve as key intermediates in toluene degradation. 🌟 Omics technologies are instrumental in pinpointing bottlenecks and uncovering unknown compounds. 🌟 Benzene undergoes both methylation and hydroxylation as simultaneous activation mechanisms. This research opens up exciting new directions in anaerobic BTEX biodegradation. Well done, Diego! 🎉 Link to the paper: https://lnkd.in/ei9UcVjH #EnvironmentalBiotechnology #AnaerobicBiodegradation #BTEXRemediation #GreenChemistry #Chemosphere #Publication

Ever wondered where does the term "Biotechnology" come from !!! Most of us know that "Biotechnology" is a new term but the principle of #biotechnology was used centuries ago. 👉 The #term "#biotechnology" was coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer "Karl Ereky". 👉 Ereky used the term to describe the use of living organisms and their products to create useful substances or solve industrial problems. 👉 He went on to publish a book in 1921 titled "Biotechnology: The Science of Life's Products." Since then, the field of #biotechnology has greatly expanded and encompasses a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. 👉 Karl Ereky wrote a book called "Biotechnology: The Science of Life Industrialization". This book, published in 1928, explores Ereky's ideas and theories on the #potential of #biotechnology to revolutionize various industries, particularly agriculture and food production. 👉 He discusses the concept of harnessing #biological processes for industrial purposes and highlights the importance of integrating biology and technology to create transformative solutions. 👉 Ereky's book played a significant role in popularizing the concept of #biotechnology and laid the for its future advancements and applications.
