Microalgae can help us treat different types of wastewater and the scientific field around it is still growing our knowledge on microalgae's water treatment potential. In our project we focus on wastewater from agricultural greenhouses, developing a cost-effective alternative to treat it and prevent environmental pollution by excess nutrients. But what about the excess nutrients on fields and how to prevent them from polluting our environment? Quick shout-out to Climate Impetus which developed a method to treat residual irrigation water before it runs off into water bodies, using only natural absorbents. Treating greenhouse wastewater with microalgae and transforming the produced biomass into microalgae-based products? Take a sneak peek at the work done by our partners from Portugal 👀 ⬇ #Microalgae #BlueBioeconomy
REALM algae project is going at full speed! During the past weeks, we performed pilot-scale cultivation and tested a biorefinery pipeline to be implemented in the project. We started with the cultivation of Chlorella sp. in 3-m3 of drain water provided by Grupo Hubel, for biomass production and removal of excess nutrients. Then, the produced biomass was harvested and concentrated using membrane filtration, which was then subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis. Finally, another membrane filtration was performed to separate the permeate from the retentate using 2 different membrane cut-offs. This process resulted in 4 different fractions, which were freeze-dried and provided to the partners for testing and product development.

How are Europe's water bodies doing? Not well. Pollution, over-use and climate change continue to threaten water resilience in Europe, finds the new report from the European Environment Agency. Despite progress in some aspects, the pressure on Europe's lakes, rivers, coastal & groundwaters is high like never before. The most important factors affecting our waters include air pollution and the input of nutrients and pesticides from agriculture. Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/gbm7i6Mv #WastewaterManagement

Free tool to simulate how much algae biomass your raceway reactor could produce! Check it out ⬇ #Microalgae #Biotechnology
NEW TOOL! NEW PUBLICATION! 💡 Would you like to know the biomass production of microalgae raceway reactors in any location around the world❓ Here you have a FREE software tool for that! ⬇️ This post presents a tool to simulate the biomass production capacity of microalgae-based processes as a function of the prevailing weather conditions at selected locations *around the world*. The tool is designed for the use of raceway reactors operated in turbidostat mode, allowing for the simulation of biomass production at whatever location for different strains as a function of reactor size, culture depth, and biomass concentration in the reactor. The tool integrates the solar radiation and temperature data available in existing databases for the selected location to determine the light availability and temperature impact in the culture, to finally provide the growth rate and biomass productivity. Hourly values are calculated to estimate a detailed overview of cultures performance, and finally, mean daily and annual values are calculated. The simulation tool developed is a very useful instrument for decision-making processes about the installation of microalgae-related facilities, and also allows the determination of the potential production capacity. Using microalgae or grass to bring circular agriculture forward? Microalgae can grow in the collected unabsorbed irrigation water of crops and decrease the nutrient content in this wastewater. But the microalgae are not only good for treating the water, their biomass can be used to produce bio-stimulants to improve crop growth. This circular approach reuses water and nutrients, reduces the need for fertilisers with a sustainable and natural product while improving crop yields. Another circular approach is all about reusing grass from grasslands to produce protein concentrate from it. It can be fed to pigs and poultry and represents a more sustainable alternative to soy-based feed. Can microalgae improve the gut health of fish? Microalgae species that improve gut health of fish, can be added it to fish feed to improve animal health. Our partners from GreenCoLab are testing Tetradesmus obliquus for exactly this activity. They presented the results of their ex vivo model experiments at the AQUA24. Check out their poster in case you missed them at the conference ⬇ We are also testing if Tetrademus obliquus can grow in the drain water of soilless greenhouses and decrease the concentration of nutrients. This is a win-win for the aquaculture, agriculture and algae industry: 🌱 farmers can use microalgae to treat their wastewater cost-effectively 💚 microalgae producers can reuse water and nutrients from greenhouses, saving production costs 🐟 aquaculturists can use the grown microalgae in their fish feed to improve animal health with a sustainably produced products #Microalgae #AquaCulture
