The report on misogyny in music is sobering but not particularly surprising for those of us working in music. Particularly important is the section on music education. We need to be careful when we’re teaching how to be successful in industry that we’re not perpetuating the same structures that create dangerous environments. If we’re being honest, when it comes to marketing in the classical music industry we all look and sound the same. Whether it’s the same copy-and-paste “delighted to announce” text, unimaginative event posters, or slide show season announcement videos, very little differentiates us from each other. This is something that affects the entire industry, from music students to international soloists, from amateur groups to professional orchestras. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean Taylor Swift regained control of her creative work, meaning not only to her musical works but also to the master recordings. Although there is some interesting backstory explaining this decision of Taylor Swift, in this webinar 4iP Council will focus on the legal grounds that made it possible. Interestingly, the webinar - which will be hosted by 4iP Council's Dr. Claudia Tapia Garcia and will welcome Dr Maria-Daphne Papadopoulou, Acting Director of the Hellenic Copyright Organization, will examine whether this would be also legally possible in the EU. In this new age where classical music seems fragile, the industry needs to start rebuilding the ecosystem that used to be the engine that generated new classical music fans. To do that, work needs to be done in two directions, both of which are quite different, but both necessary for a full ecosystem to survive. In short: 1. To deepen *current* audiences' familiarity levels, the industry needs to invest in adult educational initiatives that are designed with the sole aim of increasing that audience's knowledge and enjoyment of classical repertoire. This is not simply about facts for their own sake - all the knowledge needs to be targeted towards creating increased *enjoyment* of the repertoire. 2. To increase new audience numbers, the industry needs to invest in creating programs that will be familiar to them (and I would go even further and argue that there is a need to start commissioning / creating repertoire for that purpose). Always happy to give my $.02 to NPR - there are so many sustainability issues with respect to music/musicians. this issue that SoundExchange has been fighting the good fight on for some time is a big one. obviously, there are other pressing issues - Spotify’s moral bankruptcy, companies building enterprise value on the back of musicians’ work w/o anywhere near appropriate compensation or consideration, entrepreneurs with no concern for artist sustainability with respect to AI etc…. all that - doom and gloom - said, there is still hope. For instance, a new Bandcamp is there for the taking for someone who presents an artist-centric approach; and new technologies, whether AI or web3, do not have to be detrimental to artists, and in fact can be hugely positive sum for artists and entrepreneurs. certainly been my bias/life’s work.

Just a topic on creating music for discussion if anyone has time for it any more. I have made 100% of my income over the last 20+ years playing my own music. It's a niche genre, and I'm not claiming to be anything....just saying that I don't listen when people tell me it can't be done. What rock (especially) needs before it is completely dead are not great singers, not great performers, not great players, not great places, not great promotion. There has only been one property in the music business since it's beginning that makes it relevant to any audience, and that is great songs. There is sacrifice one must make to write and record original music before you will find out if you're any good at it. There is also a matter of how long before others think you are good enough to be paid for it. That is what paying dues as a songwriter means; Having the faith in your work to continue making that foundational sacrifice to getting there. Those who have been paying dues are the reason we've started TexLa Music Group, on 30 acres in the middle of nowhere, which is east of Houston in Fannett, TX. We are an invitation-only 24 track API studio looking for working songwriters that need help making their next "record" and willing to look at every creative idea to help great songwriters have careers making great songs. Don't let the overwhelming costs of a recording studio stop you from being the working songwriter you are. If we believe in your songs and your work ethic, we can figure out a way to make it happen.
