A new conflict has erupted in the Middle East. On June 4, 2024, Hezbollah's rocket attacks on northern Israel reignited tensions in the region and targeted Southern Cyprus. This development threatens the security of Cyprus, a member of the European Union, with the European Commission describing the threat as an attack on the entire bloc. 🆕 𝗔𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗗 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅: 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 The global landscape of conflict is intensifying. In the past 12 months, #ACLED recorded over 165,273 political violence events, reflecting a 15% rise from the previous year. Significantly, one in seven people worldwide are now affected by conflict. Key insights from the July 2024 update include: ◾ 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: Palestine is now at the top of the Index for geographic diffusion, deadliness, and danger to civilians, while Myanmar continues to host the most armed group fragmentation. ◾ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: Palestine, Myanmar, Syria, and Mexico top the Index with extreme conflict levels. ◾ 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Cameroon and Pakistan have significantly risen in the Index, now classified as having extreme levels of conflict. Our update evaluates countries and territories based on deadliness, danger to civilians, geographic diffusion of conflict, and armed group fragmentation.
