I am Bowhead - Joe Kahoe In this video, Joe Kahoe, Business Development Director for UICGS / Bowhead Family of Companies in Colorado Springs, talks about the work he does to develop business opportunities for the company by identifying, qualifying and capturing opportunities, then following through with winning proposals. "Everyone wants to get bombs on target, missiles in the air, and I love winning. We win because we have qualifications across the waterfront of requirements for the government services contracts." Joe served 30 years in the United States Air Force as a pilot flying F-106 and F-16 aircraft, and had this to add about the value of teamwork and organizational culture at #TeamBowhead: "It's a culture in the Air Force that carries over to the culture in Bowhead. We're all pulling together, we've all got each others' backs, and we're providing mutual support. One badge, one fight, one team." Interesting History From a recent Industry Week article, “In 1941, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Emergency Shipbuilding Program to rapidly build cargo ships and send much-needed supplies to the Allies for the war effort. He eventually funded industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, who had never built a ship before in his life. Between 1941 and 1945, Kaiser built 2,751 Liberty cargo ships, the largest class of ships ever built … and he built them fast! Kaiser shipyards reduced the industry average of 230 days to 45 days and ultimately to less than three weeks!” We think one way to expedite things is more efficient casting processes. Below you see a 4’ diameter drive wheel made with lost foam which was net shape including the true position on the bolt holes. 550 pounds. We made this back in 2000. About 3 days of production time which is largely driven by the waiting time to solidify and cool down.

Whenever I am in Chicago , I make it a point to visit Navy pier light house and my mind always jumps to Stephen Covey’s LIGHT HOUSE PRINCIPLES The Lighthouse Story Covey opened with a story of Captain Horatio Hornblower. As the story goes, one night at sea, Horatio awakens to find that a ship is in his sea-lane about 20 miles away and refuses to move. Horatio commands the other ship to move starboard, 20 degrees at once. The other ship refuses and tells Horatio that he should move his ship starboard, 20 degrees at once. Next, Horatio tries to pull rank and size on the other ship, stating that he’s a captain and that he’s on a large battle ship. The other ship replies, and it turns out it’s not actually a ship, but a lighthouse. The take away from the story is, there are lighthouse principles–You don’t break them. You only break yourself against them. Don’t break yourself against lighthouse principles.
