The last Atlantic Sturgeon was recorded in Irish waters in June 2023. There is no practical reason why this species could not be re-introduced into Ireland's major River Shannon. Subject to the building of a migratory species rock channel at the Parteen Weir, the major obstruction. Justifying the cost of a rock channel, is of course an immense challenge. Paticularly, in an Irish infrastructural environment, where our political leaders have proven to be especially wanting! Perhaps, combining a migratory species rock channel with a national canoe slalom course, could make the multi-purpose cost more acceptable? My 2021 concept for a rock channel can be seen below. Did you know that the waters around Isle of Arran, Scotland, have a range of protected measures which might impact how carbon is stored in our seafloor? 🤔 Our team have been surveying the seafloor across areas with different levels of marine protection, to quantify if more carbon is stored in areas with where there is more protection from human activities such as bottom-towed fishing gears. There are few studies which look at the effects of marine protection on seabed carbon, our team of scientists spent a month on Arran working to uncover how the ocean and climate are connected. 🌎 The field work carried out by our team is the first ever study on Arran’s seafloor carbon! In a recent announcement, Sizewell C have said they 'want to create an environmental legacy in East Suffolk' and to 'help rewild East of England'. Suffolk Wildlife Trust and RSPB have released a joint statement in response ⬇ "Whilst we welcome the additional wildlife habitat being provided at Wild Aldhurst (Sizewell C's nature reserve near Leiston) and applaud the long-term commitment made by Sizewell C to return large swathes of the Sizewell estate to nature post-development, we are really disappointed that the wildlife compensation sites at Benhall, Halesworth and Pakenham are being misrepresented as examples of Sizewell C going above and beyond for nature. This is not true. "Sizewell C is legally required to deliver these sites as a minimum to compensate for the impacts of the construction of the new nuclear power station on wildlife - a requirement that Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the RSPB, Natural England, the Environment Agency, Suffolk County Council, and the local planning authority have fought hard to secure for many years. "People have a right to expect far better transparency from Sizewell C when it comes to it's wildlife compensation. Sizewell C must do better to be clear about the compensation they are required to deliver by law, versus what is truly "additional" for nature." As part of a current aqua-tech development project, I've been closely following the story of the Spring Chinook Salmon in North America. This species is on the brink of extinction, with a slim chance of recovery on one side and certain extinction on the other. It reminded me of a message from my childhood hero, Jacques-Yves Cousteau. In his 1968 recording, "Tragedy of the Red Salmon," he warned us about the dangers of human interference with nature. Sadly, we ignored his message, and today, dams for energy and water supplies have made it even more difficult for the Salmon to survive. But it's not too late to change the outcome for these precious species. There is still hope, and we have a chance to undo some of the damage we've done. For the Spring Chinook Salmon, simple sticks of dynamite can remove the dams and return their environment back to its natural state. Let's heed the warning of Cousteau and work towards preserving the wonders of our underwater realm. Human extreme interference with nature rarely benefits anyone. We have the technology. And the highlight from last trip was...🥁 My first Sooty shearwater sighting! 🐦⬛ Over the last weeks we didn't have ideal observing conditions up in the north east Atlantic, but as the days went by more and more Great Shearwaters (Ardenna gravis) started to appear in their long migration south. One day, talking with birders I mentioned that I had never seen Sooty shearwaters yet and so I started to pay more attention to those rafts hidden in the swell. I found one with about 40 Great Shearwaters and I noticed a slightly different and darker one and yes, there it was! Finally, a sooty (Ardenna grisea)🖤 Funny enough, I didn't see the Cory's until I went through the pics. The light was bad, there was strong glare, the wind in the face, the vessel was moving considerably, they weren't close, my lens is big and doesn't have a good stabilizer, they were fast distancing, and so, not a great pic, but enough to see the 3 species in them. Seagrass beds are very productive Ecosystems, by providing shelters to hundreds juveniles and adult fishes, epiphytic species, mollusks. The role its playing in the entire Ecosystem is so important because it can helps as well by reducing effect of coastal erosion and maintain sediments on the seabed. It is categorized to be one of the most valuable Ecosystem in the world. National Wildlife Federation has a new product for those of you thinking about state primacy and CO2 storage! Check out our newest brief, spearheaded by our talented CDR Justice fellow Jake Ferrell: Geologic Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide: The State of Responsible Primacy. The brief includes details on what it takes to successfully permit a Class VI well, why the federal government has encouraged states to apply for primacy, and how states like North Dakota, Wyoming, and Louisiana came to acquire primacy. Additionally it explores the various qualms around primacy, including from some environmental justice organizations. I aspire to have a planet 🌎 with more clean air not less. It doesn’t matter to me who said it, but as a moderate thinker about environmental and clean energy policy (no extremes, sensible economics where all stakeholders including shareholders benefit), I find it troubling that the U.S. would restart drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and stop policies promoting electric vehicles. #sustainability #cleanenergy
