Happy #InternationalDayoftheForest - today we are shining a spotlight on our kelp forests 🔦 In the cool nutrient rich waters across the globe, dense canopies of kelp can be found. Kelp is a type of algae which grows like our forests do on land, these underwater forests also experience seasonal changes, dying back over winter ready for regrowth in the spring. Kelp forests are among some of the most productive and diverse ecosystems on the planet! Swipe to dive into our underwater forests around the world 👉

🚨 The great UK fishing scandal continues as 54% of catch limits have been set above scientific advice for 2025. Instead of giving our overfished species a chance to recover, these catch limits further jeopardize our dwindling fish populations and struggling small-scale fishing fleets. The catch limits set for 2025 go against Labour’s promise to restore the marine environment and follow the unsustainable approach adopted by their predecessors. ❌ Comment 🎣 if you want to see our government set 100% of our catch limits to be set within scientific advice, ensuring a safe future for our coastal communities and our ocean. #Overfishing #MarineProtection #MarineConservation #FishingScandal #30x30

BREAKING NEWS 🚨 SANCCOB, BirdLife SA, the fishing industry and the South African government agree to new no-take zones to commercial fishers around penguin breeding colonies. 🐧 The South African government will be implementing the agreed fishing closures around six of the last major breeding colonies of this Critically Endangered species. This agreement will secure this conservation intervention for the next ten years. Thank you for supporting this campaign to #SaveAfricanPenguins. By signing and resharing the petition you have helped save this iconic species for future generations. This settlement is a victory for marine conservation and your support made a difference. #SaveAfricanPenguins Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eNUEx9dY Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) Only One BirdLife South Africa BirdLife International The Prophets Agency

🚨 NEWS: A new investigation by Greenpeace UK reveals that giant supertrawlers continue to catch vast quantities of fish from the UK’s marine protected areas Investigators found that from January 2020 to January 2025, 26 supertrawlers collectively spent nearly 37,000 hours fishing in 44 of the UK’s offshore MPAs. The majority of the supertrawlers were foreign flagged and selling most of their catch overseas, leaving little economic benefit to the UK. ❌ Supertrawlers destructive industrial fishing methods affect the health and resilience of the marine environment, including the fish stocks available to the UK’s struggling small-scale fishing fleet. The government has the power to stop this. Comment 🐟 if you want to see our small-scale fishers and proper protection of the marine environment at the heart of fisheries policy. Blue Marine Foundation reposted this
"In the UK, students can complete their education without encountering a single marine example of all the basic fundamental processes that regulate the health of our climate." 🌊 We're delighted to see brilliant coverage of an insightful piece by our lead researcher, Dr. Ceri Lewis, and our education lead, Victoria Turner. They explore the importance of integrating ocean studies into climate education, debunk common myths about how the ocean functions, and discuss ways to encourage more women and girls to pursue careers in science. 🔬 They also highlight how our education program with Encounter Edu serves as a strong foundation for addressing these critical issues. 📚🌍 You can read the article in The Scotsman below, among many other publications. 📰⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e47wbSr7 Blue Marine Foundation Exeter Marine University of Exeter Convex Insurance #OceanEducation #ClimateScience #MarineConservation #STEMeducation #WomenInScience

Yesterday, Blue Marine and our legal partners, Richard Buxton Solicitors and counsel David Wolfe KC and Brendon Moorhouse, took the government to court for allowing decades of overfishing. Our small-scale fishing fleet is on its knees and our fish populations are in free fall. 📉 Brexit has been a failure for our inshore fishing fleet, who were promised that leaving the EU would mean taking back control of our waters and revising the allocation of fishing quotas. To date, the UK Government is still licensing over 16,000 foreign vessels to fish in our coastal waters. The great UK fishing scandal was entirely avoidable, but our government chose not to follow scientific advice. ❌ Watch ‘The Great UK Fishing Scandal’ by Big Wave Productions LTD, which explains why we chose to take the government to court below. And read “‘Slavish’ catch limits ignored scientific advice, say conservationists in case against Defra” in today’s The Guardian by karen mcveigh 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejVSeDNW Dr Tom Appleby, Charles Clover, Dr Juliette Scott, David Wolfe KC of Matrix Chambers, Brendon Moorhouse of Six Pump Court Chambers, Hannah Brown, Jasmine Finbow, Jonathan Hughes, Sarah Cunliffe, The Prophets Agency #Overfishing #LegalCase #EnvironmentalLaw #Fisheries #UKPolicy
