Today we meet Lisa Qin, a Site Engineer with Multiplex on the Western Sydney International Airport project, who shares her career journey. What do you love about working in the construction industry? One of the best aspects of working in the construction industry is the fast-paced environment and ever-changing landscape. There is never a dull moment and opportunities for learning something new are always present, one month you may be working on concrete and steel structures and soon after expanding your knowledge on fit-out or façade systems. I also love the collaborative nature of the job which has allowed me to create meaningful relationships with my immediate team, consultants, and subcontractors. How did you get your start in the construction industry? I’ve always been interested in the built environment field, being able to visualise your efforts in something tangible is quite rewarding. Initially I studied Architecture in university but eventually completed a degree in Civil Engineering as I recognised the versatility of career paths the degree offers. After university I was lucky enough to have joined Multiplex through the Graduate Program and start my career with the Western Sydney International Airport as my first project, it has been a special journey being able to see the progress of project from the ground up. What is your advice to women thinking of joining the industry? Don’t let the 'male dominated' label of the industry deter you; keep an open mind. While construction is undoubtedly a tough and demanding field, there are great support systems in place tailored to everyone’s needs. The steady influx of females joining the industry can be attributed to the increasing presence of women in leadership roles, which demonstrates a genuine demand for more women in the industry and highlights the range of opportunities available. This is evident in my project team where there are currently several females in senior positions whom I aspire to be.

Project Director at AECOM | Design Management & Assurance | Delivering Sustainable Infrastructure Solutions
First Impressions: My Journey from Low Carbon Infrastructure to Multi-Discipline Design Management at AECOM 🤝 3 months ago, I embarked on an exciting new chapter in my career by moving teams to be a Project Director of the Multi-Dis, globally-focussed, Design Management team. Transitioning from my previous Low Carbon Infra/Engineering team has been both challenging and rewarding. Here are some of my first impressions from this journey so far! Embracing Change: Stepping into a new directorship has been a significant yet rewarding shift. My scope of responsibilities has changed, now supporting a diverse team of ~40 talented professionals. One of the most exciting aspects of this has been the opportunity to work on a wider variety of projects spanning sectors and geographies. From UK-focused net zero infra, I'm now involved in breadth from Ukraine rebuilding programs, to flood alleviation, to airports, and even cutting-edge energy projects. Collaborative Culture: One of my primary goals is to foster a more collaborative and inclusive culture within the team. I believe the best ideas come from diverse perspectives, and I have and will actively encourage open communication and teamwork. During a recent leadership development week, we developed a series of collaboration principles and approaches for an upcoming mega-project. The week was a thought-provoking time for reflection on what collaboration means to us and highlighted its power within our teams. Navigating Challenge: No transition is without its challenges. One of the initial hurdles I’ve faced is determining where to best apply my time and efforts. With the support of my team, my new UK&I director Stephen Webb, unit leadership Paul Aylwin, and the wider AECOM community, we have honed our sector strategies and are now working on delivering the vision! This experience continually reinforces my belief in the importance of adaptability and embracing growth. Innovating the Future: Innovation has always been a key driver in my career, and AECOM’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and engineering is truly inspiring. In the past 3 months, I've been privileged to work with our teams on some market-leading design management and collaboration platforms, bringing efficiencies and managerial rigour to our largest schemes. These projects are not only a professional highlight for the teams, but also a testament to AECOM’s innovative approaches. Looking Ahead: 3 months in, I am filled with excitement for the future of Design Management. The journey so far has been a blend of learning, growth, and collaboration. I am eager to continue building on this and contributing to the success of our team and the broader organisation. I am grateful for the warm welcome and support I have received from my colleagues and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead! 📈 #aecom #designmanagement #careerdevelopment #aecomcareers #freedomtogrow #leadership

Welcoming Jason Frericks, PE, PTOE, our newest Senior Project Manager in the Highway Design department! He brings 22 years of transportation engineering experience, working on a variety of traffic planning, roadway design, traffic signal design, and railroad engineering projects for DOTs, local governments, and private clients. In his new role, Jason will be managing roadway projects, working on the traffic components within those projects, and helping build the Kansas City office team. Welcome to #LifeAtLochmueller, Jason! Get to know Jason more 👇 What led you to your career path? “When I was in the 7th grade, my English teacher asked each of us to write a report on what we wanted to do when we grew up. I chose Civil Engineering since I wanted to be the one on the job site that knew what was going to be built. Now I enjoy seeing my work get constructed and solve real world problems. I enjoy transportation engineering since it has a community-focused impact of reducing congestion, improving drive times, and making roadways safer and smoother to travel.” #WhyWednesday What is your all-time favorite TV show or movie? “Any of the Bond movies.” This or that: Intersection, roundabout, or a different kind of innovative intersection? “It really depends on the situation and community you are located in. The traffic volumes may lend towards one type of intersection. If I had to pick one innovative intersection, I would say diverging diamond interchanges; it really is a creative way to solve an intersection problem at interchanges.” #newhire #welcome #welcometotheteam #newemployee #seniorprojectmanager #projectmanager #PM #roadwaydesign #highwaydesign #transportationengineering #transportation #trafficplanning #trafficsignaldesign #railroadengineering #civilengineering #solvingrealworldproblems
