It was not long that PUB built one of the world’s largest solar panel floating farms in Singapore (size of ~45 football fields) to try produce enough electricity to power our five water treatment plants. Today, I read about PUB building the world’s largest facility to boost the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. How this will be done: 🐚The technology by American start-up Equatic pumps seawater from adjacent desalination plants through electricity. This leads to chemical reactions that split the seawater into hydrogen and oxygen. 🐚The dissolved CO2 is combined with minerals in seawater like calcium and magnesium to produce solid limestone – essentially trapping the CO2 for at least 10,000 years. 🐚The process mimics the natural formation of seashells, and the solid calcium and magnesium-based materials can either be stored on the ocean floor, or potentially be used for construction materials if found viable. 🐚What an ingenious idea - to use nature’s ways as inspiration. And I can see how the solid limestone can potentially help provide some of the construction materials we will need to build the Long Island, to shield us from the effects of rising sea levels. Hope the technology works at scale, so that we can address the complex challenges posed by climate change. Like my post yesterday, this is a great example of how we can still remain optimistic in spite of various challenges if we continue to invest in new ideas and new technologies. Water Desalination in Southeast Asia: A Vital Solution for Water Scarcity Southeast Asia, with its rapidly growing population and economic development, faces significant challenges in water scarcity. Desalination, the process of removing salt from seawater, is emerging as a critical solution across the region. Singapore Singapore has been a pioneer in desalination, with its first plant, SingSpring, opening in 2005.Today, desalination meets up to 30% of the country’s water demand, with plans to increase this to 85% by 2060 (PUB Singapore) Indonesia Indonesia, with its vast archipelago, has also turned to desalination. The country currently operates 19 desalination plants.These plants provide crucial water supplies to regions like Bali and the Riau Islands, where freshwater resources are limited (Indonesia Ministry of Public Works and Housing) Malaysia Malaysia has initiated several desalination projects, particularly in coastal and island regions.The Pulau Besar Desalination Plant, capable of producing 0.5 million liters of fresh water per day, is a notable example (Malaysian National Water Services Commission). Thailand Thailand is investing in desalination to address water shortages in tourist-heavy areas such as Phuket and Pattaya.The Pattaya Desalination Plant produces approximately 1.5 million liters of water daily, supporting the local population and tourism industry (Thailand Provincial Waterworks Authority) Vietnam Vietnam is exploring desalination to combat saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta, which affects agricultural productivity.Pilot projects in regions like Ben Tre Province are paving the way for larger-scale initiatives (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) Philippines The Philippines, an archipelago with over 7,000 islands, is increasingly adopting desalination technology.The largest plant, located in Cebu, produces up to 22,000 cubic meters of fresh water daily, addressing local water shortages (Metropolitan Cebu Water District). Coming to SIngapore 2024: Singapore to build World's Largest CO2 Removal Plant Mimicking the natural formation of seashells, this technology electrochemically treats seawater. This process splits the water into hydrogen and oxygen, while simultaneously capturing dissolved CO2. The CO2 then reacts with calcium and magnesium in the seawater to form solid limestone, effectively trapping the carbon for at least 10,000 years. PUB's $20 million project, operational by Q4 2024, aims to remove a staggering 3,650 tonnes of CO2 annually, upwards of 100 times more than its existing pilot plants.
