Favorite role of my career? Swimply where I had the unique opportunity to build the company from the ground up. Covid was a huge accelerant for our business and we had massive product-market fit but no people, process or systems. As Employee #1, I had the privilege of hiring our early executives and the first 70 people into the company to run operations (CS, T&S), host success, community and more. An absolute highlight was the unique opportunity to build (vs inherit) the culture -- one of celebration and belonging -- despite being fully remote during the first two years of the pandemic. Some of the programs we rolled out: Getting-to-know you Mondays, Tuesday Trivia, Gratitude Wednesdays, virtual happy hour and team building, Highlight of the Week, cupcake & snack deliveries, employee shouts, game nights, 1:1 Donut meetings, Employee of the Month spotlights, and more. Employees felt seen and celebrated. And most importantly, we led with a People-first lens. Gen Z are lazy. I’ve heard this too much recently, direct and in the media (The Telegraph housing the most recent columnist culprit!) Why are we bashing an entire working generation?? I’m excited by what this collaborative, pragmatic, assured and worldly generation bring to the table, and I know the possible impact of high performing cross-generational teams… but not many are getting it right, right now. Monday Observation is back! Today we are talking about communication: The Queen of Disciplines for Product Builders. I have noticed, that founders and product teams do not communicate their Work in Progress to a wider group that often, if ever. Mostly the stakeholders have some insight into the current developments, but the users or the followers only get the shiny "we have launched" news. It might seem counterproductive, but sharing WIP with your network can bring positive results: people like to collaborate and co-create, and might deliver super useful feedback to you at the early stage helping you succeed in the long run. The same goes for the teams: founders should be sharing the WIP with the company, not just product teams (even that happens rarely), but sales and CSMs, which helps to keep everyone informed and build more transparent communication channels within the company. The great company culture is built on over-communication. Over-communication is a skill and should be applied accordingly.
