Independence Day also honors the courage and vision of the Founding Fathers who laid the foundation for the country’s principles and governance. The phrase often cited to express the foundational principles of America is "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It reflects the Enlightenment ideals that influenced the founding of the United States, emphasizing individual rights and freedoms as core values. Land ownership was a driving force behind the settlement and development of the United States. It provided economic opportunities, shaped social hierarchies, and motivated political movements. The promise of land ownership attracted settlers and fueled westward expansion, while the desire to protect property rights influenced the nation’s founding principles and legal framework. #Americandream #Liberty #Happiness

The Trust for Civic Life and $8 million to fund civic participation in rural communities are examples of what philanthropy can accomplish when funders work together. That was the goal when Stephen Heinz, president of Rockefeller Brothers Fund, asked Carnegie Corporation of New York to join a funder collaborative a year ago, resulting in an early commitment of $3.5 million from the foundation. Today the collaborative has 15 funders. The Trust’s work is grounded in research that was funded by philanthropy and conducted by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Its report titled "Our Common Purpose" made a strong impression. It provides pragmatic, nonpartisan approaches to countering mistrust and division in our society. A second round of grants to support civic entrepreneurs is planned for later this year, and if all goes as planned, the collaborative will invest $50 million over the next five years. https://lnkd.in/ebyPnCVt

As we observe National Reconciliation Week in Australia, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme, Now More Than Ever. It’s a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue. This important week encourages Australians to learn about the rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and achievements. It also serves as a call to action for all of us to contribute to reconciliation. It is also a time to reflect on the profound and painful impact of the Stolen Generations, who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. Reconciliation is not just about acknowledging history but also about taking meaningful steps towards equity and justice. This week, let's engage in conversations, participate in events, and educate ourselves about the ongoing impact and wrongs of colonisation. Now more than ever, the work towards reconciliation must continue, and we will continue in the gracious offer to walk with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in that journey.
