Learning from an Olympian, Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history who won silver at the Paris Olympics on August 5, 2024. Like 'Movement' (physical activity), 'Mindfulness' offers multifold brain, heart, and mental health benefits. While they work differently, their combined effects can improve cognitive, cardiovascular, physical, and emotional well-being, making them valuable practices to incorporate into daily life. Like any other practice, start small, 5 minutes a day, and increase gradually to 10; it is even better if you aim for 20 minutes. If Simone Biles can find time for breath and stillness amid the intensity of a gold medal chase, we all can. Before a big presentation. Before a meal at your desk. In a parked car, on a park bench. Upon waking or before sleep. Prioritized over scrolling or shopping or unwinding with a few drinks. Our breath is inarguably the most powerful tool we have to focus, to ground, to calm, to reset. Whats more, it’s easy, free, and always available to access. All we have to do is attune to it. Even five minutes can make a difference. As a yoga teacher for two decades, there’s no practice I recommend more often, or with as much conviction, than intentional breathing. But it is indeed a practice, one that may be simple… but not necessarily easy. Especially at first. That’s because when we quiet the body, the mind can get loud and disruptive. Through deep, measured breathing we can learn to settle the mind and the nervous system, to focus less on mental gymnastics and more on inner peace. And if f that’s not a gold-medal-worthy pursuit, I don’t know what is. 🏅 #mentalhealth #wellness #breathe #yoga #focus #relax
