Expo West Day 1 is in the books! We had lots of great conversations and interest from BIG players in retail across North America. Also, a lot of great friends stopped by to say hi and try our new Hydration Replenisher flavors. A couple of lessons from Day 1 before Day 2: - Share your story and your why! In this environment, buyers may not remember every reason why your product is 'so-called' the best, but they will remember your face, your smile, how you treated them and the passion that went into creating what you've made. Give them something to remember? - Sample deliberately! There are so many people that it's easy to get carried away. If you're an emerging brand, keeping costs in check is very important. - Treat everyone with respect, but be aware of who might be a time suck. You've only got so much time on the floor, and that one connection might just be passing by for a split second. If you're not ready for them, then you might miss your chance. - Have fun! Most of the time we spend building our businesses is behind a desk/not in a social environment. Take advantage of the good energy and atmosphere - it will resonate with those passing by and translate into a successful day. More lessons coming tomorrow. Jameson Pioneers St. Patrick's Eve For Jameson Irish Whiskey, a Pernod Ricard brand, to launch a marketing push introducing St. Patrick’s Eve on March 16, a significant amount of market research would likely have been conducted. This initiative aims to extend the celebration of Irish culture and, by extension, the consumption of Jameson, by adding an additional holiday. Research into how consumers celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, including traditions, behaviors, and expenditures, to understand the potential for extending the holiday. This would include looking at both the Irish market and international markets where St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated. Surveys and focus groups to gauge consumer openness to adopting a new holiday tradition. This would help in understanding the motivations, barriers, and incentives needed to embrace St. Patrick’s Eve. Sabrina Carpenter's barista shift marks the latest celebrity "customer service cosplay." Pop icon Sabrina Carpenter made a surprise appearance on June at cult London coffee shop brand, Blank Street, to work a shift as a barista and serve free coffees to Espresso fans… Is it that sweet? I guess so ;) Carpenter is a self-confessed fan of Blank Street which has taken London by storm since opening its first store in the UK just two years ago. Fans were delighted as Sabrina worked behind the counter and served them free espressos, to promote her single, 'Espresso' and in ode to her Number 1 hit. ⚡Flashback Friday to the first-of-its-kind campaign that took the skies by storm✈ The Situation❌: A year after the TCLOV opened, they were killing it as a game-changing lifestyle brand. Every room, restaurant & entertainment venue was consistently at capacity & in demand - but the casino floor was having a different success. Leadership threw a jump ball to the IAT team. The All Terrain team grabbed it & ran with it. Our Insight🔆: 1 in 7 travelers to Vegas make plans after they land in one of the noisiest places on earth. Leading us to a white space in the only place they weren't being heavily marketed to… in flight. The Solution✅: we created a first-of-its-kind campaign with an in-flight gifting program. During beverage service, the flight attendants would ask the passengers if they would like a gift from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. YES, PLEASE, was always the answer! Travelers were given a sleek box containing beautifully designed on-property offers & premiums. Offers varied with some food & beverage, but most were gaming-focused. Seatmates began to trade cards & make plans to visit TCOLV at 30,000 feet. The Results👏: 600,000 gifts were distributed within the first 6 months, coupled with 30,000 new loyalty members joining in the initial 6 weeks of activation. With a remarkable 5% redemption rate, this initiative captured MASSIVE attention & paid for itself in the first 6 months. The campaign was such a success that it was extended for another 2 years, solidifying its place as the best-performing OOH campaign for TCOLV for that time frame. Just 1 week to go until our next all-client insights event, ‘Brands Away from Home’. We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to LABS House and challenging the received wisdom around Brands in the foodservice and away-from-home market. Of course, there will be some ‘not-so-surprising’ tensions around price, but attitudes do feel different. The motivations to buy brands back-of-house vs. front-of-house are changing, as is the ‘level of access’ operators will give brands to help support their businesses. It’s all shifting and it’s all up for grabs. We look forward to sharing this New Brand Reality next Tuesday, and, as it’s the #Cateys that evening - we may string it out - present in black tie - and go straight onto the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London. Anything could happen. Could I be any more excited for the next three days given the day and a half I’ve already had in New York. More steps than I thought possible but the only way to savour the city and learn more about its retail offerings is to get out and walk around it. I think every trend on the 2024 ‘trends to watch’ list has been ticked and experienced in person. Yesterday’s pre conference session on Retail Media was actually a fantastic example of why events such as the National Retail Federation conference are so important because it showed consistency in thought-led expertise. When you have different experts from around the world - supplier, agency and retailer experts- talking on a topic such as retail media, all bringing different case studies and angles but ultimately all showing the same results and having the same conclusions, it’s a powerful reinforcement around the key things that are shaping and evolving our retail industry. The couple of hours spent being guided by the formidable Jack Stratten were fantastic and deserve a post of its own so watch out for one to follow with my take on an afternoon in SoHo, taking in an eclectic mix of stores. It starts all over again today as the actual conference and expo itself kicks off. The scale of this gathering of suppliers from around the world is staggering. Looking forward to seeing it all. The phrase ‘child in a sweet shop’ comes to mind.
