We're kind of tired of hearing outdated ideas about nonprofit work and what's expected of talented people in the sector. Let's retire myths like these: - You should just be grateful to have a job you love - You get to work for a cause that’s important to you, so your pay and responsibilities don’t matter - The cause is always more important than your needs and your dreams Any more you'd add to this list? People shouldn't have to fear being seen as the dreaded Ambitious Woman or feel embarrassed by a desire for personal achievement. Planning for your career isn't selfish -- it's necessary. The world needs more people willing to dream, make plans, and serve as role models. We share some tips for getting started on a career plan in The Organizer no. 6: https://lnkd.in/edyhp4dx #nonprofit #career #womenatwork #newsletter

In the fast-paced world we live in, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget what truly matters. We often forget that time is a precious commodity, and once it's gone, we can never get it back. That's why it's so important to take time out of our busy schedules to create positive memories with the people that matter most to us. Whether it's a simple walk in the park, a cozy movie night at home, or a weekend getaway, the memories we make with our loved ones are the ones that will stay with us forever. So, don't wait for the perfect moment to arrive because it may never come. Seize the day and make every moment count. Remember, the time for making memories will not always be available, so make the most of it while you can. Cherish the moments you have with the ones you love and create memories that will last a lifetime. #recruiterlife #hiringnow #employment #resume #talentacquisition #jobseeker #business #jobhunt #staffingagency #jobsearching #recruiterslife #entrepreneur #careerdevelopment #jobs #communitycollege #economicdevelopment #nonprofit #career #cte #careergoals #skillsgap #comm #manufacturing #training #smallbusiness #smallbiz #learn #startup #construction #Resilience #Grit #Mindset #Hope #PlayToWin #CalmUnderPressure #ChangeisGood #Work #Jobs #Career #CareerChange #greatresignation #futureofwork #futureofjobs #trends2024 #success #bigideas2024 #workforcedevelopment #vision #visionarythinking #visionaryleader #visionaryleader #opportunities #communitydevelopment #businessdevelopment #GrantWriting #EconomicDevelopment #CommunityTransformation #GrantSuccess #ConsultancyExcellence #professionaldevelopment #traininganddevelopment #learninganddevelopment #leadershipdevelopment #staffdevelopment #studentdevelopment #humanresources #recruitmentagency #job #career #careers #staffing #nowhiring #jobseekers #recruiterlife #hiringnow #employment #resume #talentacquisition #jobseeker #business #jobhunt #staffingagency #jobsearching #recruiterslife #candidates #vacancy #recruitmentconsultant #entrepreneur #careerdevelopment #jobs #communitycollege #economicdevelopment #nonprofit #career #cte #careergoals #skillsgap #comm #manufacturing #training #smallbusiness #smallbiz #learn #startup #covid #construction #entrepreneur #careerdevelopment #jobs #communitycollege #economicdevelopment #nonprofit #career #cte #careergoals #skillsgap #comm #manufacturing #training #smallbusiness #smallbiz #learn #startup #covid #construction #communitydevelopment #skillsusa #careerteched #cmths #perkinsv #perkinscte #ctemonth #jobtraining #humanresources #onetwoseven #econdev #diversityandinclusion #employeeengagement #technology #hr #success #leadershipdevelopment #professionaldevelopment #careers Alabama State Department of Education EBSCOed Maxwell Leadership Wildsparq Transcend, The Fearless Company C12 Business Forums Leadership Greater Huntsville Leadership Alabama, Inc. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of representing the Chartered Institute of Fundraising alongside Jamie McIntosh at the University of Edinburgh’s Careers Coffee Pop-up. Our presence was well-received, with several students seeking us out directly due to an email the Careers Hub had circulated and others drawn in by curiosity. The engagement was a clear indicator of the growing interest in fundraising as a viable career path. What stood out most in our conversations was the resonance of our diverse academic backgrounds—Jamie with business studies and accounting, and me with history—demonstrating to students that fundraising is a profession open to a variety of skill sets. The fact that many of these students are already volunteering and considering a future in fundraising is an encouraging sign for the sector. That said, there remains significant work to be done in making the path to fundraising more accessible. A recent poll I conducted underscores the ongoing challenges in professional development, with many potential entrants still uncertain about how to break into the field. This brings me to a key point: the need to focus on transferable skills, rather than adhering rigidly to the notion of an ‘ideal candidate.’ Years ago, I was recruiting for a major charity and advocated for a candidate with exceptional skills, though she wasn't a traditional fundraiser. Despite initial hesitation, she was hired and eventually rose to a senior leadership role. Hiring managers, it’s time to ask: does your next position truly require a fundraiser with 2-3 years of specific experience? Or could a candidate with the right aptitude and transferable skills exceed expectations, just as she did? Let’s widen the lens and ensure we are not missing out on potential talent.

Chief Development Officer | Nonprofit Consultant | Seeking to understand all things philanthropy ➡️ Founder of Next Gen Fundraising Network
𝙏𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙉𝙤𝙣𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙞𝙩 𝙏𝙞𝙙𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙨 📌 Is our work like climate change? Nonprofits are always looking to make their work/missions more sustainable...or atleast, they should be. This sector cannot continue to work (let alone be sustainable) if we continue on the same path. We need systems in place to ensure that the right people are contacted, stewarded, and engaged. The mention of "Growth Plans" need to be included in job descriptions, leadership & management training needs to be paramount for supervisors, and nonprofit employees need to stop being overworked at the expense of the nonprofit "saving money." It's costs much more money to restart a search when that person leaves after 6 months. Search committees are always looking for the perfect candidate. I'm here to say that there isn't always a right candidate and you're missing out on great value-add individuals because your blinders are "on." Not like firing a P5 football coach, but it is all relative 😉. There will be people that say it won't work. Others will choose to continue what they've been doing. We need more people who have the vision to create sustainable change in our profession. No matter how long it takes, It will positively influence our professional for years. Shout out to EverTrue

💬 Let's start a conversation: How can nonprofits balance passion over plain qualifications in the recruitment process? 👩⚖️ One of our Merit® Nonprofit Professional Development team leaders told us that he wants to not just find passionate people, but use the recruitment process to gauge how he stokes their passion about the organization's mission and the person's shared values. 🕵♀️ Recruitment, in its most mechanical sense, is the process of filling vacancies. But for those who navigate the unique landscape of nonprofit recruitment and retention, it's akin to kindling a fire. It goes beyond looking for a set of skills; it includes seeking individuals whose hearts beat in sync with our mission, whose aspirations align with our objectives, and who can embody the spirit of our organization in every action they take. 🔍 Is it too aspirational to seek people who choose to invest their talents in a nonprofit and have reasons that go beyond the paycheck? Maybe so. And it's possible that seeking those who are driven by a purpose, a desire to contribute to a cause greater than themselves, creates a potentially exploitative or uncompetitive scenario. After all, there's a reason why we expect that nonprofit jobs often pay less: because they do. 👩🌾 We want our team to show up in all the ways: with intent, with energy, with an unwavering commitment to make a genuine difference. 👩🏭 Our work in the nonprofit sector is demanding, often requiring more than what we initially ask for. It's the passionate individuals who rise to this challenge, embracing the values and breathing life into the culture of our organizations. They drive our nonprofits forward, becoming not just employees but champions of our causes. 👩❤️👩 Their passion becomes contagious, igniting the same fervor in their colleagues, volunteers, and the communities they serve. This creates a magnetic environment that not only achieves its targets but also attracts more like-minded individuals. It is a cycle of inspiration that begins with recruitment – recruitment that focuses on passion just as much as proficiency. #NonprofitSector #Recruitment #PassionInWork #OrganizationalCulture #Leadership #NonprofitLeadership
