It's Early Childhood Mental Health Awareness Month, and we want to shed light on the direct connection between maternal mental health and children's mental health. Research shows that when maternal mental health suffers, there is a generational impact felt by the children. Congress cannot ignore this issue. Funding maternal mental health programs and improving access to paid family leave, postpartum medicare coverage, and other services proven to support maternal health is CRITICAL to help our nation's mothers and families as a whole. My world was turned upside down in December 2018 when I became a mom; not only because it was such an incredible transition in my day-to-day life, but also because I am one of the 20% of mothers who experience a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD). May is #MaternalMentalHealthMonth and as I reflect on my own postpartum experiences, I think the hardest part was acknowledging what I was going through and finding the time, space, and energy to ask for help. It's easy to come up with excuses: 🚫 Everyone tells me that it's supposed to be hard.  🚫 [Fill in the blank person] seems to have it under control.  🚫 I'll feel better once I've slept / eaten / showered.  🚫 My baby needs me to be 100%. I don't have time for this. These excuses are reinforced by the way our society treats new mothers. Abysmal maternal health outcomes. Nonexistent or limited postpartum medical support. No paid family leave. Social norms that can discourage partners from playing an equal role. Constant judgement and struggles around feeding, including a complete lack of support for breastfeeding and a complete lack of accountability for a safe and strong formula supply chain. The list goes on (and on, and on...). I view this month as both a chance to create open conversations about maternal mental health and, hopefully, drive some meaningful changes to help new mothers feel supported. Let's ensure all moms have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
