Key Takeaways: • Demand flexibility and whole-of-home energy management will be key to enabling more electrification and decarbonising the economy • Home energy management will help leverage rooftop solar, the world’s cheapest form of generation • Enabling more Customer Energy Resources (CER) to be connected to the grid - while reducing the network augmentation - reduces costs to all customers (even those without CER) • The ability to optimise energy use over a large number of appliances + vehicles (and integrate with flexible retail plans and network signals) could support greater efficiency and cost savings Interoperability is key to ensuring customers can access maximum benefit of their CER investment while enabling them to ‘plug and play’ different appliances, home energy management systems and retail offers without ‘lock-in’ 🎉 A big thank you to our speakers Jonathan Leake and Daniel Redman, CFA from ActewAGL and everyone who participated and shared their insights. We announced yesterday that we are wrapping up our trial of EVs in the Balancing Mechanism with National Grid ESO, demonstrating successful domestic participation and the potential for significant balancing cost savings. We’ve now entered the market’s first EV-only unit, the next step towards scaling this up to the volumes we need for impactful system change. https://lnkd.in/e2vXxpgi

The suddenly simple stuff of science-fiction. What are Virtual Power Plants? A collection of office and home based items like solar panels and batteries that can chip in collectively at peak times to make sure our national grids don't get overwhelmed. This would mean a lessened reliance on centralised power generation methods, many of which are still currently fossil fuel fired. Sounds almost like a no brainer but until now hasn't truly been at the forefront of most #NetZeroTransitions. RMI has now published a comprehensive guide-book on these intruguing new initiatives and how they can reduce local communities overall dependence on fossil-fuels. Highlighted among many other things in the thoughrough flipbook they write: 1. 70 VPPs currently operate across 25 US states and generate between 30-60mw 2. At appropriate scale VPPs could account for 20% of peak energy grid demand and save up to $10 billion 3.
