It's important for employers to provide easy access to fresh water in the workplace. For staff, staying well-hydrated during work hours is essential for productivity, concentration and avoiding fatigue. When your brain lacks water, it can cause difficulty with information retention, memory recall and your attention span, which are key links to good performance. Ways to stay hydrated could include keeping water nearby, setting reminders and limiting dehydrating drinks. #borgandoverstrom #workplacehydration #waterintake #cleanwater #purewater #filteredwater #drinkwaterdaily

Fatigue remains a significant workplace hazard that demands careful management, even as employees return from the summer holiday season. It is no secret that the hot days of an Aotearoa summer (and so far 2024 is a lot warmer than 2023) can contribute to exhaustion, and as employers, we need to be vigilant in addressing fatigue as a safety concern. While the summer holiday season is, for most, a time for relaxation and rejuvenation, it's crucial to recognise that fatigue remains a genuine concern for all workplaces, even after employees have enjoyed a well-deserved break. We discuss this in greater depth in our latest blog which you can find here https://lnkd.in/gHHXAGcX Also, here is a helpful resource from Worksafe on their website which can help you manage the risk of fatigue within your workplace https://lnkd.in/gTBt-rzm

Employers: Please make sure your employees are prepared for & protected from the extreme heat this week as much as possible. Frequent breaks in the shade & drinking 1 cup of water every 15 minutes are absolutely critical to preventing heat stress injuries & illnesses. New employees may need some time to acclimate to working in high heat conditions, and others with preexisting medical conditions are much more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, both of which can be fatal. If it's possible for you to reschedule work to be performed from 4am to 12pm and then send employees home during the hottest part of the day, please consider that option. Also note that ambient air temperature and heat index are measured in the shade. Employees exposed to direct sunlight while working in these temperatures are at extreme risk. Productivity and safety must work together to be successful. We can't just stop working because of high temperatures, but we can't ignore the impact those temperatures have on our employees either. Make sure all of your employees go home to their families every day.
