I am NOT going to '𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁' my boy to be a Software Engineer... If he doesn't '𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁' to. And for that sake, anything — because his path is uniquely his own. ----------------------------------------------------------------- We celebrated our boy's 1st birthday this weekend! A milestone that has me reflecting on the journey ahead. Like any other Dad, or as a dedicated working parent, it's natural for me to want the best for my kiddo. Thoughtfully, I've decided on my role in my son's education and his future career journey: 1. I am not going to decide on what is good/bad for him. 2. I would like him to "figure out himself" and go through the "difficult path". 3. Of course, I will guide him, but am not going to impose my wants. 4. I won't ask him to be the 'best in class' but will challenge him to be 'better than his previous self'. As he grows up, I will make sure that he knows or hears that: 1. I love him, without conditions. 2. I’m proud of him no matter what. 3. I forgive him. 4. I’m always listening. 5. I'm always there for him. 6. You’ve got what it takes. Obviously, he is too small to understand any of this, but hopefully, this post serves as a memento and reminder for me. #softwareengineer #parenting #dadlife

PSA: It’s ok to take a break! Working and living in the software engineering sphere it’s far too easy to fall into the trap of “must keep going”, often times without even realising. This can happen in many different forms. It’s not just limited to doing loads of extra hours at your day job. Trying to keep up with all the new toys we get to play with, especially at this time of year, can be quite taxing. Always wanting to stay up to date while trying to balance work and your personal life is something that can quickly become unsustainable. Everyone is guilty of trying to do too much at one point or another, it comes with the territory of working in an industry you’re passionate about. That shiny new method that speeds up your processing by 300ms will still be there tomorrow, or next week. The world won’t end if you’re not the first to play with it. tldr; I graduated from General Assembly! last year, I made an impulsive decision to study software engineering and I am really glad I did. I initially took this step for personal and career growth, but as I started learning and building projects, I discovered how much I enjoyed it and it blossomed into a newfound passion. For 6 months, I was juggling part-time study after work and on weekends, it was undoubtedly challenging and exhausting. My off days were spent in the library, I turned down every social event and my music plans took a backseat. It was tough. But I was so fortunate to have encouraging and passionate instructors who always went the extra mile to share their knowledge and guide me through. I will always appreciate and remember their kindness and generousity they showed me. My classmates were the most intelligent and inspiring bunch whom I learnt so much from. It was a short time, but we grew close and celebrated birthdays and little wins together. Coding opened up a whole new world for me, I started getting excited about ideas that had only briefly crossed my mind before. I wanted to explore so many ideas, and it lead to the creation of 4 projects: a rhythm music game featuring local music, an AI chat app, a local online bazaar, and a yoga app. I genuinely enjoyed working on them as it resonated with my interests- music, supporting local businesses, and yoga.
