Why MAELSTROM? We asked our partners which were, according to them, the most important aspects of our project. Giorgio Betteto, from our partner Gees Recycling, says: “Gees Recycling’s participation in MAELSTROM project is a success based on our real-world recycling experience. We have developed the MAELSTROM App and Portal from our experience in tracking waste - indispensable for having control over the #recycling process. This has allowed us to offer recycled products from #marinelitter with complete transparency. MAELSTROM project has also generated a full range of recycled products from abandoned boats, benches, tables, and urban furniture that are recycled, recyclable, and outdoor-resistant, opening new opportunities for #circulareconomy for local communities.” (EU Science, Research and Innovation, EU Environment and Climate, European Research Executive Agency (REA), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR-ISMAR Institute of Marine Sciences, Deltares, University of Malta, CIMA Research Foundation, TECNALIA Research & Innovation, Venice Lagoon Plastic Free, CIIMAR, The Great Bubble Barrier®, MAKEEN Energy A/S, Centre national de la recherche scientifique, LIRMM)

International Coastal Cleanup Day 2024 🌊 On September 21, 2024, Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) partnered with Go Shoonya, a pioneer in sustainable solutions, to organize a highly impactful Coastal Cleanup Day. With the participation of 15,310+ volunteers, we successfully collected an incredible 53,000+ KG of waste, highlighting the urgent need for environmental responsibility, climate action, and innovative waste management 🌍. One of the standout moments of the event was the LIVE on-site recycling of 662.12+ KG of plastic waste into eco-friendly products like keychains and flower pots ♻️. Additionally, our Recycled Living Room, showcasing furniture entirely made from repurposed plastic waste, brought to life the potential of circular economy practices 🛋️. We are immensely grateful to the NSS-trained youth volunteers, who ensured seamless operations throughout the day 👏. This collaboration between VVCMC and Go Shoonya highlights the power of partnership in advancing sustainability efforts, reducing carbon footprints, and paving the way for a CarbonShoonya Bharat 🌱. At Go Shoonya, we remain committed to promoting zero-waste initiatives, sustainable living, and environmental innovation as we continue our journey toward a cleaner planet 🌿. Join us in pushing the boundaries of sustainability, circular economy, and creating a more eco-friendly future! 🌎 #CoastalCleanup #Sustainability #GoShoonya #CarbonShoonyaBharat #ClimateAction #ZeroWaste #Recycling #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #EnvironmentalResponsibility #GreenLiving #PlasticPollution #SustainableFuture #CarbonFootprint #EcoInnovation #CleanTech #CircularDesign #GoGreen

At the end of Earth Month, we are reflecting on the past month of SWANA conferences, meetings, and events that advance SWANA’s goal of being a climate champion. The INC-4 showed that there is a great need for improved resource recovery and management, which our members do every day. SWANA provides members with the technical resources and information needed in their daily work to manage waste as a resource. Amy Lestition Burke, Executive Director & CEO of SWANA, shared these thoughts during the SWANA side event at the INC-4: “As I have been attending events this week, I hear the statistic that the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped in the worlds’ oceans, rivers, and lakes every day. This fact is actually on the homepage of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Plastic Pollution website. Why is it a garbage truck? Think about that. This statistic projects an image of garbage trucks and recycling trucks dumping plastic waste into the ocean. When in reality, recycling trucks are preventing plastic pollution. The waste and recycling industry is providing solutions. We are hearing about ambitious goals to improve recycling systems and recycling rates, and that can’t happen without basic waste collection. We need to move beyond a take-make-waste model to a circular economy model and we can only do that through collaboration. Together we can change that image of a recycling truck dumping plastic into the ocean and change it to an image of the recycling truck being the link to make recycled products.” #EveryDayisEarthDay #EarthDay #EarthMonth #Earth #ClimateChampions #SWANA #SolidWaste #Recycling #PlasticPollution #Pollution

Since 2021, I’ve been leading the used fishing nets collection project at Nuplas Solutions. Early on, I discovered that most of these nets end up being burned, sent to landfills, or leaking into the ocean — none of which are sustainable or responsible solutions. This is where the concept of the circular economy comes into play. Instead of letting valuable resources go to waste, we aim to keep materials in use for as long as possible, reducing environmental harm and generating value. After overcoming many challenges and visiting numerous fishing communities, I’m excited to say that we are now successfully collecting their used nets and transforming them into high-quality recycled pellets. These pellets can be reintroduced into the production cycle, closing the loop and contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy. #CircularEconomy #SustainableSolutions #WasteToValue #OceanConservation #OceanPlastic #PlasticRecycling #RecyclingInnovation #GreenBusiness #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #ResourceRecovery #NuplasSolutions
