Another quarter, another weak set of numbers from Kohl's. Even with an extra week of trade in the quarter, Kohl’s still hasn’t managed to grow sales which fell 1.1%. Comparable sales, which strip out the extra week, were down by 4.3%. Some of the slump is the result of more constrained consumers pulling back and buying fewer items – a trend that has hit Kohl’s shoppers harder than those of many other department stores. But it is also evident that Kohl’s customers are shopping around more widely and are diverting some of their spend to other chains like Target and TJX. This trend has been in play for a while and shows no real sign that it is reversing. A lot of this is related to uninspiring stores and a weak proposition. Kohl's has plans to address this, including the opening of new Babies R Us shop-in-shops at 200 stores. But while the current plans may help to stem the tide of decline in the year ahead, they are unlikely to produce stellar growth. I chatted with Retail Dive about the latest results... https://lnkd.in/e9u8ShJh #retail #retailnews #departmentstores

Kohl's – what do you stand for? First Amazon, then SEPHORA, and now Babies"R"Us? Kohl’s has been diluted. The modge podge of brands, including private labels, and shops within shops need to be cleaned up. The message is no longer clear. The middle class once went to you for fashion at a value for the whole family. Compelling curated collections telling her what she had to buy for every member. The assortment is no longer there. The service is no longer there. I’ve been greeted by employees giving me the up and down as I walk in to make my Amazon returns (and leave buying nothing) my last several trips. You have given families reasons to go to Amazon, Target, and The TJX Companies, Inc. Target has the fashion and quality at a value, and well, Amazon and TJX have the price. Large square footage stores with an abundance of stuff are no longer the answer. What are the top 20 brands within apparel doing most of the work? Focus and double down. Baby is an interesting category to focus on since Buy Buy Baby is no longer the 137 stores it used to be, but the hard work won’t help if everything else isn’t cleaned up. Stats: 💵Q4 net sales fell 1.1% 💵Net income grew to $186M from a loss of $273 the year prior 💵Compared to pre-COVID 2019, sales were down 12.7% #retail #baby #fashion #stores #service #experience
Another brand tie-up at Kohl's meant to entice new customers to its stores, this time with Babies R Us. But despite its new "sensible and experienced" management, the department store is probably going to continue to struggle for a while, GlobalData's Neil Saunders tells us. #retail #departmentstores #apparel #shopinshop https://lnkd.in/epwquDt8

Waiting weeks for a pair of sandals to arrive before an outdoors trip was not what I had in mind... I ordered them from Kohl's on August 7, and as of now, there’s been no delivery and no communication. This is what a broken carrier experience looks like. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If Kohl’s was using FenixCommerce, instead of Narvar, I would’ve been notified early, maybe even offered some Kohl’s Cash to smooth things over. I could have already bought something else and moved on. It’s about time retailers upgrade their systems to truly support their customers. What’s been your experience with retail delivery lately? #CustomerExperience #RetailTechnology #DeliveryDelays #RetailInnovation #SupplyChainIssues #CustomerSatisfaction #EcommerceSolutions #OutdoorAdventures #IdahoOutdoors #ConsumerFrustration #TechForRetail #FenixCommerce #UpgradeRetail #RetailTransformation #CustomerFirst

Macy’s hasn’t closed 150 stores yet. But Target, Kohl’s CEOs already smell opportunity. Macy’s is closing about 150 of its namesake stores across the country. It could put up to $2 billion in annual sales up for grabs for other retailers. Off-price chain T.J. Maxx and Kohl’s could benefit because they already count many Macy’s shoppers as their customers, according to Jefferies and Earnest Analytics. $M $TGT $KSS $TJX $ROST https://lnkd.in/ejP4bfpr #tradeguard #receivableputoptions #arputs #receivableputs #tradereceivables #accountsreceivables

Executive Administrative Professional 🎭 | Petrichor Enthusiast | Umami-rich | Excited to find a new path !
Every now and then I'll call out a company for strange business practices to get an explanation from the people who know how it works. Today subject is Kohl's ... long post but infinitely relatable Hi Kohl's ! A week ago I ordered an item. Yesterday morning after checking notifications and the website it said it was delivered. All excited I go to the front door.. no package :-( after checking the. United States Postal Service tracking it said it was awaiting the package. btw... as of this morning they still do not have it. this morning the notification said that it was delivered... again no package I just spent 15 minutes on the phone with a representative. apparently the post office doesn't even have it yet. I asked her if she could cancel the order and reship a new one overnight? I was told that I cannot do anything about it until the 10th. So Kohl's this is quite a way to boost your delivery stats isn't it? I'm wondering if there is some kind of legality to this considering that it would be a federal issue. What an absolutely ridiculous and DECEPTIVE practice.... and a guaranteed way to lose business in a climate where you really don't want to do that. I've been in your stores lately they're looking kind of empty ...people, employee and merchandise wise. None of this would have been a problem had my notification and your website had not said it was already delivered. #retail #kohls #badbusiness #shoplocal #deceptive #usps

International Business Development Manager at Meyer Seals Group®-The SEALutions company® | Supply Chain Management/Logistics, Business & Economics | All views expressed are my own
"Unlike Walmart, which remained in the Walton family, or Target, which handled its transformation from family-owned business to public corporation far better, Kmart underwent very early rapid growth and then began a long period of coasting and decline." "While Kmart has long been viewed as a sort of downmarket Walmart clone, it’s worth noting that Kmart came first—not just because the company that became Kmart goes back to 1899, but because the opening of the first modern Kmart in 1962 beat the opening of the first Walmart by a few months. It was not until the 1990s that Walmart became a major national player in the discount department store industry. It’s more accurate to say that Walmart beat Kmart at its own game than that Kmart failed to properly imitate Walmart." "Like Kmart, Howard Johnson’s made several attempts to revitalize its business. A parade of managers who had none of the personal investment of the chain’s founder, Howard Deering Johnson, successively took the reins. The company began to introduce new restaurant concepts, and it underwent a series of acquisitions as well as the division of its hotel and restaurant businesses. All of this flux and churn depressed morale, eroded managerial continuity, and left the once-great restaurant half of the company to fend for itself as its numbers dwindled." "Throughout this long, slow decline, nobody seriously attempted a “reboot” of the company; nobody bothered to attempt monetizing whatever goodwill the name still held, by, say, bringing back the real recipes of the famous 28 flavors of ice cream. That kind of investment or passion or capital was gone." "Despite the former ubiquity of both Howard Johnson’s and Kmart—and notwithstanding the nostalgia of their small communities of fans—both chains have left hardly a trace in the popular culture. In business, as in life, past performance is no guarantee of future results. The demise of Howard Johnson’s, and likewise that of Kmart, is a cautionary business tale. But it’s also a humbling and almost spooky story." Optimizing the supply chain is a crucial investment for JCPenney as it will enable fulfillment of customer orders more accurately and cost effectively, support growth, and enhance overall operational efficiency. Congratulations Marc Rosen and the rest of the world class JCPenney #supplychain team!
June has been a busy month for JCPenney! Last week, we officially cut the ribbon on a new state-of-the-art computerized induction, sorting and packing system in our distribution center in Reno, Nevada. The best-in-class equipment and technologies offered by the Joey Pouch system will help us to better support our associates and our future growth in online orders and will help us fulfill customer orders more accurately and efficiently. In 2023, we announced a multi-year, self-funded reinvestment of more than $1 billion into our business and brand aimed at better serving America’s diverse, working families, including in-store physical and technology upgrades, enhanced digital capabilities and merchandising and supply chain operation. The Reno facility is a key part of this update to our #supplychain, and I was so glad to be able to join the team to celebrate this milestone last week.

Senior Product Manager | eCommerce Strategist | I help SaaS solutions grow revenue by improving their customer journey and experience.
The TJX Companies, Inc., Inc. plans to grow its off-price footprint as regular-price department stores close. Notably, TJX has a minimal e-commerce presence as it focuses on its "treasure hunt" experience in-store. I love the joy of discovery as well. Where TJX focuses on the discovery of apparel, shoes, and housewares, I love discovering new Funko Pop's, Hasbro action figures, and McFarlane Toys statues. But that doesn't mean #TJMaxx, #Marshalls, #HomeGoods, #Sierra, #HomeSense, #Winners et al. shouldn't use digital technology to funnel more people into their stores. 🥇 TJX could use "livestream" commerce to follow a brand ambassador around a store to preview new merchandise, and have viewers flock to the store afterwards. 🥈 TJX could provide digital communities on Reddit, Inc. or Discord to bring their communities together to share their finds and insights into when new merchandise hits the racks. 🥉 TJX could use digital mementos to track store visits and let shoppers display them as digital badges, showing their love and commitment to the brand. #ecommerce #treasurehunt #customerexperience #digitalsupportingphysical

Nowadays, it’s not just police wearing body cameras. TJX, the parent company of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods, are equipping their hourly security workers with body cameras. The goal is to reduce shoplifting and ensure the safety of customers and employees. During an earnings call last month, TJX’s finance chief, John Klinger, said that the body cameras serve as a form of “de-escalation, where people are less likely to do something when they’re being videotaped.” TJX is not the only retailer considering this approach. According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, 35% of major U.S. retailers revealed that they were exploring the use of body cameras for their store workers.
