The massive populations of people on the move today - including immigrants & refugees - are the most important issue of our time. They are the most vulnerable group of people in the world while being filled with assets that can be tapped into and leveraged for their good and for the good of their new communities. How we respond is critical for their future and for the future of our cities. What can we do? 👣 We can go out into the neighborhoods where they live to welcome families build relationships with them and fight together to help them find their footing. 🚀 We can help children & youth in these communities do well in school with the help of tutors, mentors and vision-building opportunities. 🤝 We can build relationships that create connectedness, helping families reweave a new social fabric around them that provides support, care and encouragement. #loveyourcity #urbanization #godonthemove

On World Refugee Day, we shine a spotlight on more than 108 million people worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes because of conflict, poverty, disaster, and violence. Losing a home has ripple effects beyond the physical building: It can fracture a family and disrupt people’s economic and emotional well-being. When uprooted, people are often separated from their loved ones and support networks, have limited access to food, water, health and social services, education, and livelihoods. Safe homes are the first step for uprooted families to rebuild their lives. Our two-part approach is designed to have a transformational impact where it’s most needed: Expanding the reach of our programming, and bringing about systemic change through partnerships with key stakeholders to adopt safe and dignified approaches. In this way, we will extend our impact.

How can we ensure that refugee and #immigrant families have better access to early childhood services? Recent research from the Urban Institute and SwitchboardA highlights the importance of policies that offer free, culturally responsive child care and early #education, which have been shown to significantly increase enrollment. Other effective strategies include community outreach, culturally and linguistically matched staff, and providing services in accessible locations—all of which help bridge gaps for these families. Learn more about the practices, policies, and interventions that can make a difference in the lives of refugee and immigrant families with young children. #earlychildhoodeducation #childdevelopment https://lnkd.in/gPu9fAUi

Did you know that California takes in more refugees than any other state? The San Diego Economic Equity Report developed in partnership with the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center, reveals that California, Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles are the top destinations, taking in 46% of the nation’s total refugees in 2019. Among San Diegans in the labor force, immigrants and non-immigrants are very likely to be working (92.3% of immigrants in the workforce are employed and 91.7% of non-immigrants are employed). However, immigrants in San Diego are 13% more likely to live in poverty than non-immigrants. Nearly 91,000 immigrants in San Diego live in poverty. San Diego has the potential to benefit tremendously from the economic and cultural contributions of new Americans if we can effectively invest in their social and economic flourishing here. Our director Simone Mangili is at the The Klosters Forum this week discussing a range of #resilience issues and how #cities are rising to the challenge. A few of the themes include rethinking how cities approach #climate action by: ➡ supporting community mobilization and power to design and implement solutions ➡ centering priority communities - BIPOC, immigrant and refugee communities, people who are differently abled and other people whose lived experience isn't well represented by city staff ➡ pursuing actions/solutions which address the underlying systems and thereby multiple community priorities - social, economic and environmental ➡ adopting new policy development approaches which daylight opportunities to better advance these goals More on our #climatejustice work at CNCA: https://lnkd.in/eD3UQvJ9
