Nust career fair bridges education-employment gap: With the aim of bridging the gap between education and employment, the Namibia University of Science and Technology Annual Career Fair showcases a diverse lineup of local and international companies across various industries. The career fair is taking place on 17 and 18 April, and will showcase companies and organisations such as Dundee Precious Metals, Namibia Investment and Promotional Development Board, and First National Bank Namibia, among others, while also including various faculties from the university. Multimedia practitioner at Nust, Nadia Meding says that the career fair is a transformative opportunity for the youth to ignite their passion and shape their future paths. “In today’s fast-paced world, success is more than just about grades, it’s about connections, insights and seizing the right opportunities,” Meding said. According to Meding, the career fair provides a platform for learners to engage with industry experts to explore diverse career paths. The fair also allows learners an opportunity to gain valuable insight into the changing job market. She says that exposing learners to various career paths allows the youth to make informed decisions about their careers. Graduate metallurgist at Dundee Precious Metals, Candice Salkunga, says that one of the values of Dundee is to empower communities and the youth. “Such events are all about exposure. The more you expose them (young people) to different things, the easier it gets for them to pick out what they want to do for the rest of their lives,” Salkunga said. She added that engagement of companies with young people allows them to interact with industry experts and learn more about the fields. Speaking on the same platform, National Youth Services corporate affairs and marketing manager, Belinda Hamburee, said that their presence at the Namibian University of Science and Technology Annual Career Fair is to help equip the youth for their future. “The reason why we are here is because we are sharing information with the youth to prepare them for their future,” Hamburee said. According to Hamburee, the NYS application for the 15th intake is open and used the platform provided by the career fair to engage students on the opportunities available. During Career fairs, there were some booths where I had meaningful conversations with recruiters: starting by introducing myself getting their name, and striking up conversations from an aspect of their firm I found interesting. Then some just told me to scan this QR code and drop their CV. When I received this prompt during last week’s GRADUAN® Career Fair at KL Convention Center last Sunday 26th May, I straight up lost interest, and I walked away. Why so? Just by the attitudes displayed by promoters in the booths alone, you can tell what sort of company culture they have, which traits of character they encourage or discourage in its employees, correlating to them treating future colleagues (us!) My most positive experiences visiting these numerous booths came from these recruiters treating prospective employers with sincerity, and a willingness to share and advise on career prospects. Some encouraged me to explore my own to discover what I wanted to do in their offered graduate programs. From what I learned talking with them, graduate programs do not look at university degrees anymore, what matters is passion and desire rather than qualification to receive a fresh graduate role. There is no need for an Economics or Finance degree to apply for a Banking or Digital Analyst Program anymore. Rather it is now the norm to learn on the spot, to fill up demand for the most crucial skills by training their employees. Hence their search for passionate people who have drives to learn and explore and determination to finish the job. If employers want to poach this type of talent, they should make efforts to fill them not as roles to fill up empty job positions but as a space where creative potential is vested and passion grows. This must start by treating prospective and current employees well, and they’ll soon return the favor. Employers are not entitled to employees' efforts if there’s no meaningful culture, no support or room to grow, to explore autonomously with guidance on their interests and passion. Of course, I should thank those who made an effort to give me a good first impression. Shoutout in particular to: Muhammad Hafizuddin Kamarruddin from Citi, Faizal M. P.S: My friends told me that those from Toyota Malaysia, EPF Malaysia, and Maybank received them warmly aswell.

87 RBS Students changed their professional future and were placed in December in companies such as KENZO, FAO, KPMG and Lottomatica. Here's a glimpse of the valuable experiences our students had last month: ✅Engaging Company meetings with Zuma, Decathlon and Mama Shelter ✅Interesting Workshops with Novartis, Hays, Google and Manpower ✅Participation in the most international Onlie Career Fair (63 Companies, 723 Students). ✅Two exciting Company Visits with Teatro Olimpico and Fonteverde Polina Kozhevnikova, Global Master in Human Resources Management student, told us how formative the experience at RBS was, and in particular the job opportunity found thanks to the Career Center: "thanks to RBS I found an internship in my field in the largest telecommunications company in Italy, TIM. It also allowed me to have a lot of international contacts, and I have to admit that after the RBS Career Fair I became very resistant to the stress of interviews, because during the Career Fair you introduce yourself to different professionals at least 10 or 20 times. Which is barely possible to do in a day in your life, so I definitely overcame that resistance." It is just perfect then, that it was thanks to the encounter during the Career Fair that Polina landed the job in TIM. Today Polina, Organization Development & processes Intern at Tim , has no doubts about what is the tips to give to her fellow students to get like her a career opportunity: "multinational approach in terms of languages, the more you speak the better, not to be afraid of rejection and to keep looking for opportunities and the third tips is to ask RBS professors how to build a career and which direction to look, they are always willing to help and support, since they are working professionals they might also give you some reliable recommendations or contacts in companies."

Here’s the deal: Past Experiences: Some managers swear by these events, saying they've had decently successful hires in the past. But realistically, they usually walk away with only 20-25 resumes and often end up hiring just one intern a year from those fairs. 🤔 Visibility Argument: Their reasoning is that attending these fairs boosts our visibility with students, which could lead to more online applications later. Budget Concerns: Our finance director is pushing back big time on the travel and hotel costs since interns rarely become year-round employees. And let’s be real, in our seasonal hospitality business, that’s not really our main goal. 💡 Idea for schools when arranging careers fairs… Yesterdays Apprenticeship Academy focused on where to find opportunities. We spoke about offline opportunities, including asking about apprenticeship programmes following work experience placements and networking at careers fairs. Feedback from our participants with regard to Careers Fairs is that there was a) lots of unis and not many employers and b) too much information given in a short space of time and they couldn’t take everything on board. An idea from this could be to have smaller careers fairs that focus on sectors. Students agreed that this would be better for them and they would rather attend a smaller fair with less stands that feels more relevant to their industry interests. #sharingthegoodstuff #thevoicesthatmatter
