🌿 Protecting Our Western Ghats: A Call to Action! 🌿 The recent draft notification by the Centre to declare over 56,800 sq km of the Western Ghats as an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) marks a crucial step towards environmental conservation. 🌍 This initiative comes in the wake of devastating landslides in #Wayanad, Kerala, which claimed over 300 lives. Key highlights of the draft notification: 🔹 Area Designation: Kerala: 9,993.7 sq km, including 13 villages in Wayanad. Other States: Gujarat (449 sq km), Maharashtra (17,340 sq km), Goa (1,461 sq km), Karnataka (20,668 sq km), Tamil Nadu (6,914 sq km). 🔹 Restrictions: Complete ban on mining, quarrying, and sand mining. Prohibition of new thermal power projects. Ban on 'Red' category industries and large-scale construction projects. 🔹 Expert Panel: Established to address objections and ensure accurate representation of villages. Nine meetings held to refine the proposal. Majuli, the world's largest river island, faces severe erosion and climate challenges. However, innovative afforestation efforts have made a significant impact. In Majuli, projects like the Molai Forest, created by Jadav Payeng, demonstrate the transformative power of tree planting. Over several decades, Payeng single-handedly planted and nurtured a thriving forest on barren land, which now spans over 1,360 acres. This forest not only provides shade and reduces temperatures but also supports local wildlife, stabilizes soil, and enhances the ecosystem. Majuli's afforestation initiatives show that community-driven efforts can mitigate the effects of heat waves and climate change. #Rights | Located in the northern part of Chennai, Ennore is a fertile, brackish wetland with a canopy of large mangrove forests. Surrounded by the Kosasthalaiyar river, the Ennore creek, and the Bay of Bengal, it serves as a refuge for a wide range of bird species. Previously, the land in Ennore was a salt pan and utilised for agriculture. But the lush area is now turning uninhabitable for the residents. In the 1960s, the Tamil Nadu government initiated the re-zoning of the Ennore–Manali region into petrochemical and coal-based industries. The area is now home to more than 30 red-category industries. A majority of Ennore’s residents—who are primarily from working class backgrounds and belong to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities, including the Irular tribe and the Semdadavar fishing community—rely on fishing in the Kosasthalaiyar river and the Bay of Bengal. But emissions and residues released from nearby industries have caused severe environmental degradation, polluted the air and water, and impacted people’s health and livelihoods. In this article, K. Growing up in the water-scarce Solapur district of Maharashtra, Abhijit Sathe lived through the harsh realities of water shortages, where a 24-hour water supply was a distant dream. This firsthand experience ignited his passion for water conservation, leading him to found JalSevak India, a company that specialises in greywater recycling systems for households and commercial buildings. JalSevak has developed a six-step process to recycle greywater from sinks and showers for non-potable uses, like watering plants and flushing toilets, reducing reliance on freshwater by up to 40%. With their systems now operating in 12 cities across India, Abhijit's company helps recycle 1.25 lakh litres of greywater daily, contributing significantly to the country’s water conservation efforts. The Art of Living organization has been instrumental in transforming the water situation in Hunsur taluk of Mysore district, Karnataka. Since 2021,  their initiatives have brought about significant changes, including constructing rehydration buildings in the area.  Using geotagging technology, suitable locations were identified, leading to establishing five or six rehydration buildings in the town. Local farmers and environmentalists have witnessed the positive effects firsthand, with the region being excluded from the list of 216 drought-prone taluks.  Over the past 5 to 6 years, borewell water levels have risen dramatically, with water now accessible at depths of 10-12 feet,  compared to the previous depths of 40-45 feet.  This significant change has benefited the farmers and contributed to the restoration of the local ecosystem.
