I agree and disagree. Just coming from my own perspective as a daily content creator now in the TV space with some real estate in podcasting and having spent almost three decades in radio. Yes, I think it is important to incorporate it into your sports content, but to make it 100% of your content is a mistake. Sports shows are like restaurants. If I went to a restaurant and all they had was one dish, even if that dish was good or great, I’d get bored with it. I think most people would get bored with it. Yes, incorporate it into your shows. Agree on that. But I wouldn’t go all betting, all the time. 60% of sports fans in a relatively recent poll said they never placed a bet on sports. Do you want to alienate them with a bunch of numbers and information that is useful to die hard and some casual sports bettors, but useless to them since they are not betting on sports. I respect everyone who wants to do what they want with their platforms. I recently had a text exchange with someone who decided to go the route of building a sports betting/fantasy platform. This is a smart media guy that I respect a ton. He talked of the struggle because of how crowded the sports betting/fantasy space is. Diversify and reach more people? Or all-in on one thing? 🤔
If a media company isn’t investing in gaming content in 2024, they’re missing the mark. Betting handle records are getting reset monthly in legal states. Texas and California 2-4 years away from joining the party. Other states coming online. Trends to all demos. Raises engagement. ESPN launched its mission to grasp the top spot in US #iGaming through its new app, ESPN Bet. Much commentary suggests this takeoff comes too late, with earlier movers Fanduel and DraftKings duopolising the market. However, the numbers show that the online US market is in its infancy. As forecasts demonstrate, the market will grow a further 60% by 2027 (@Eilers & Krejcik Gaming). Competition is growing.
