As I work for National Capital Area Council, BSA, I know firsthand that Scouting has a positive impact on youth and our community. A recent study conducted by The Harris Poll shows that those who have been involved in Scouting as youth or adults have what we are calling a “Scouting edge.” Scouts and Scouting alumni are more likely to engage in positive behaviors and are more likely to act in ways that are considered ethical and moral. Scouting also develops one’s leadership abilities and the competency to help others accomplish their goals. Good citizenship and helping other people at all times are tenants of Scouting and are part of the program at every level. This study confirms that Scouts and alumni are significantly more likely to vote, volunteer in the community, and take an active role in charitable organizations. The program uses golf to integrate key lessons of the game with life lessons, emphasizing Nine Core Values: honesty, integrity, perseverance, confidence, respect, responsibility, courtesy, judgment, and sportsmanship.

Dang, community - you knock our socks off! Olympic Angels volunteer send monthly reports letting us know about purchases made to support the families and youth they are matched with. Support is tailored to meet specific needs: 🚙 if a child wants to go to a summer camp - not only will they help pay for the camp, they'll give rides to make life easier for the caregiver 🛏️ if a caregiver suddenly takes in kids they weren't prepared for, volunteers have helped purchase beds - and then actually put them together Every report is different and unique - but the one factor that is always consistent is their commitment and generosity. 🤩 That $25,077 is the amount so far that was reported by volunteers going straight to families and youth in foster care community, never passing through Olympic Angels. Neighbors helping neighbors. $143,932 is the in-kind value that includes volunteer hours, miles driven by volunteers, and tangible donations from local businesses that directly benefit the foster care community. Philanthropy often refers to "community" in their missions, visions and values statements. They also use the term "community" to determine who, how and where they provide funding. Inside Philanthropy asks a crucial question: what do philanthropists and grantmakers really mean when they refer to "community?" Tools like the Community Bill of Rights provide an opportunity for philanthropic organizations to assess how they engage with communities to make decisions. They can also help to prevent harmful power dynamics that can diminish community voice and action. #Philanthropy #CommunityBillofRights

#CommunityFoundations are worth starting, growing and keeping, former #Indiana Governor #MitchDaniels suggests in #OpEd in #WashingtonPost Thurs 1 Feb. A great thought piece promoting #Philanthropy, but one that will offend #BigGovernment #Progressives #Marxists #Socialists who want to see such discretion relegated to #PoliticalElites who prefer to use the awesome power of #Government to #Confiscate and #Redistribute money, e.g., from those who work / save to those who decided not to do so. (You'll read that "push back" from them in the "Comments" at the #Post.) #Delaware has a great one in the #DelawareCommunityFoundation, developed and run for years by my friend #FredSears and a decade ago transitioned to #StuartComstockGay. I serve on the Board of one of its #GivingCircles, the #AfricanAmericanEmpowermentFundOfDelaware, of which I was a #FoundingDonor some 15 or so years ago. It's more than 50years since I first ran across, covering a press conference as a young reporter in #Champaign #Illinois for the creation of a #ChampaignCountyCommunityFoundation. I liked the idea then, and I love it today. For those not familiar with the #BusinessModel, compared to #UnitedWay which receives annual donations that help support annual charitable budgets, #CommunityFoundations receive legacy-quality #EndowmentFunds that continue to exist in near-perpetuity to throw off #AssetsUnderManagement #AUM returns / income to benefit the targeted cause / beneficiary. As someone who grew up in rural poverty, one of my personal goals is to help build and seed a #WaltzFamilyFoundation that one day can exist to support some charitable endeavors of interest to our #Waltz Family.

In 2023, grantmaking through Charityvest reached new heights. Our grantmaking grew considerably, funding greater impact, with organizations supported across all major charitable sectors. Here are some key grantmaking stats from 2023: ➪ $32M in grants (🔼60% from 2022) ➪ 6,855 unique organizations were supported (🔼17%) ➪ With a payout rate of 54% (Foundation Center method) ➪ A healthy payout rate is important to us. This payout rate of 54% shows that our donors get money out to their favorite charities. Taking a look at this considerable growth, we are thrilled to see our grantmaking expand. As part of the Virginia Community Engagement Index (VCEI), we found that 51% of respondents had donated $25 or more in the past year to a nonpolitical cause. Only 8% of respondents reported that they haven't found a cause they care enough about to support financially. In short, when people can afford to, most are willing to invest in the causes they believe in through philanthropic support.
