Welcome back to Aurora Men's Shed. Monday we had a special treat, a meeting at which Heart to Home Meals was to do a presentation with … wait for it … real FOOD. It was packed room, more tables and chairs had to be bought in to accommodated all the interested and “peckish” participants. The expectations where high, the presentation was very interesting, so much more goes into preparing these health and nutritious meals than we thought. Lots of Question and Answers, especial on why salt and sugar are used (Salt enhances the flavour and Sugar gets you “addicted”). The tension was growing, when was the expected soup samples coming. They even looked good on the screen. At long last they where came and where speedily handed out and quickly devoured. A confession from this participant – normal I am not fond of soup … will sip it on a rare occasion to be polite. BUT let me tell you, this sample was DELICIOUS. Then on the main meal, ok sample of a main meal. It was absolute “yummy.” If there where not so many people around I would have licked the sample dish cleaner after thoroughly scrapping the sides clean. Another great meeting. There can be a lot of pressure for Thanksgiving dinner hosts to create a great experience for family and friends; all with different unspoken assumptions of what they want out of the gathering. Dinner hosts often communicate the What: - turkey - football - pie and not the Why: - to re-unite family through deep conversation - to elevate a mindful eating experience - to be active and playful through sports and activities Communicating the WHY of the gathering will surface underlying assumptions of your guests, clarify what to expect, and reduce your anxiety as a host. The What is in service of the Why. -- The same is true of the meetings and collaborative working sessions that you lead. Why are you having the meeting? Declare it to bring clarity to your guests, whether they end up gorging on pie or or flaring on new product ideas.

As I’m reading through this article a line catches my attention. “People aren’t drinking wine because they aren’t optimistic about tomorrow.” And there are definitely a lot of things that weigh on us in the current world we live in. While I do believe collectively we are less optimistic about tomorrow than we maybe once were, see all the articles about the dying American Dream. I have to wonder if we have also forgotten how to celebrate the small victories and joys? Or are we just becoming more “NUMB, NUMB, NUMB” to those small joys as well. To be an ever optimistic person is hard if your a stoic, pessimist, or maybe even a realist these days. But does that bottle of wine with friends only exist to celebrate the optimistic outlook of the future or does it create it on its own A big intrinsic struggle happening in the industry right now is am I a winery or an event venue. Maybe the need for being an event venue or offering folks a space to hang out with really is more about trying to satisfy an underlying need to help create an optimistic future. A place to gather people together to commune and have conversation. Maybe we have seen a downturn in our sales because we aren’t fostering enough atmosphere for creating memories. Does a Bartender just pour drinks or do they provide an environment for conversation and connection? Does an amazing meal prepared by a chef just give us physical sustinance or does it nourish the soul? Should a winemaker just make wine or should they help create optimism in a bottle?

I don't drink hot drinks. "What about tea?" That's a hot drink, dummy. I just said I don't drink them. So does this leave me feeling left out of office environments that offer 'hot drinks' as a perk? No, I work for myself? This wasn't an inquisitive, philosophical post... Still, the stigma around non-hot-drink ... drinking is real. This obsession with being spiked with caffeine and being WEIRD for not wanting that for themselves is...persistent. You're all self-medicating, aren't you? What are you running away from!?
