Many believe that personal branding is reserved for entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants, speakers, authors, etc... However, I'm here to challenge that thought and argue that anyone can—and should—develop their personal brand, no matter where they work. Take the story of a client who was a CEO at a major corporation. In a town deeply rooted in relationships, she was unknowingly building a powerful personal brand in her corporate role. By engaging with other CEOs, collaborating with media, and supporting non-profits, she built a network that extended far beyond the corporate brand she represented. This meant that when she chose to leave the company, her personal brand continued with her on to her next endeavor, which meant her relationships did as well. If you’re nestled within a corporation, remember that your personal brand is your career's backbone. It travels with you beyond job titles and company changes. It’s what people remember when they think of you. But how do you discover your personal brand? Start by identifying what you stand for, how you want to be perceived, and how you can uniquely contribute to your industry or community. Then, actively seek opportunities within your role to display these qualities. Network, volunteer, speak, write—do whatever it takes to let your personal brand shine through. Building a personal brand within a corporation isn't just possible—it's one of the most strategic moves you can make for your career. Everyone has a personal brand. You just need to "uncover" it.
