This is your friendly reminder to come on out on Saturday May 18th from 9am - 2pm at the American Red Cross - South Mississippi Chapter in Gulfport and join Morgan Legacy Group, LLC in donating blood for the sickle cell community. We need a diverse culture of community members to donate! Here are 3 sickle cell disease facts related to blood transfusions: 1. Blood transfusions can help manage complications of sickle cell disease. These complications include acute anemia, painful episodes called vaso occlusive crises, and organ damage. By infusing healthy red blood cells, transfusions can help increase oxygen flow, reduce pain, and prevent further complications. 2. Frequent blood transfusions can lead to iron overload. Red blood cells are rich in iron, and with repeated transfusions, excess iron can accumulate in the body. This iron overload can damage organs like the liver, heart, and endocrine system. To address this, iron chelation therapy is often used to remove excess iron from the body. 3. Finding compatible blood can be challenging. People with sickle cell disease often have complex blood types, making it difficult to find compatible blood for transfusions. This is why blood donation is especially important for sickle cell patients, as it helps ensure a readily available blood supply. Donate blood. Save a life. It really is that simple! ‘Without selfless blood donors Oliver wouldn't be alive, and we want to thank everyone out there.’ Three-year-old Oliver has Diamond Blackfan Anaemia Syndrome, meaning his bone marrow does not create red blood cells. He needs a life-saving blood transfusion every month. Last month, Oliver received his 50th blood transfusion at Alder Hey Children's Hospital and will soon undergo a bone marrow transplant. Jess & John, Oliver's parents, say he is a force of nature. He is happy, mischievous, resilient and makes every day an adventure. ‘Without our wonderful NHS he wouldn’t be here today. We will be forever grateful to blood donors for giving us a chance to experience all the happiness and love that our son brings.’ By giving blood, you could save up to three lives an hour – visit www.blood.co.uk #WorldBloodDonorDay #GiveBlood #NBW24

Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin has issued an emergency appeal due to a blood shortage! To meet the needs of hospitals and ensure they have enough blood for patients, 3,500 donors (500 p/day) are urgently needed this week into next week. When our blood inventory gets as low as it is now, it jeopardizes the health and safety of patients who rely on life-saving blood transfusions. In some cases, hospitals are forced to postpone surgeries or delay critical treatments. Trauma victims from car accidents or shootings are at the highest risk, as their survival often depends on a healthy blood inventory. If these types of cases occur in the coming days, we might not have the blood needed to keep them alive. Patients undergoing organ transplants and battling cancer, and even mothers in labor could face treatment delays or complications due to a limited blood supply. ALL blood types are needed, but the need for type O blood is especially critical. If you do not know your blood-type, the best way to find out is to sign up to donate. As a reminder, WDL is hosting our next Blood Drive THIS FRIDAY August 16th from 9 am to 1pm. This is our chance to make a difference in the lives of so many who are in need! LOCATION: A3540 Conference Room 8701 W Watertown Plank Rd Milwaukee, WI 53226 MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT: Appointments are highly encouraged. It's equivalent to a 30-minute jog! 📌 Did you know that regular blood donation can help reduce iron levels in the body, which may lower the risk of heart disease? 📌 Did you know that type O negative blood is the universal donor? It can be given to patients of any blood type. 📌 Did you know that type AB + is the universal recipient? They can receive red blood cells from any blood group. 📌 Did you know that one donation can save up to three lives? A single pint of donated blood can be separated into red cells, plasma, and platelets. 📌 Did you know that blood donation takes only about 10-15 minutes? However, the entire process, including registration and recovery, takes about an hour. 📌 Did you know that every two seconds, someone in the world needs blood? Proper intra-procedural blood management is crucial! Blood loss matters!
Prime example of why minimizing procedural blood loss is paramount for preservation of valuable blood bank supply. Any time a patient requires an AVOIDABLE intra/post procedural blood transfusion, it puts critical patients at risk. It takes away from the trauma patient in dire need of a life-saving infusion, the anemic/sickle cell patient w/ a GI bleed, the leukemia patient needing replenishment of RBCs, and many more. Proper intra-procedural blood management cannot be emphasized enough. BLOOD LOSS MATTERS! Get out and donate. #bloodloss #bloodmanagement #patientcare

As I have been giving blood for last few years. Today I donate my blood for my father. Here are some of the benefits of blood donate. 1. Weight loss: Timely donating blood helps in reduction of weight and improving fitness in healthy adults. According to the University of California researchers, donating a pint of blood i.e., 450 ml helps your body burn about 650 calories. But it must not be thought or encouraged as a weight loss plan. Doctor consultation before donating blood is a must, to avoid any health issues. 2. Prevents hemochromatosis: Donating blood can lower the risk or may prevent the development of hemochromatosis, a condition in which there is an excess absorption of iron by the body. Regular blood donation may lower iron overload, hence proving it beneficial for people with hemochromatosis. However, it is imperative to ensure that the mandatory standards of blood donation eligibility criteria are met by the donor with hemochromatosis. 3. Reduce heart disease risk: Regular blood donation keeps in check the iron levels, which lowers the risk of heart disease. A large amount of iron build up in the body can cause oxidative damage which has proven to be a major culprit in accelerating aging, heart attacks, strokes, etc. 4. Lower cancer risk: Higher levels of iron in the body are an invitation to cancer. By donating blood, you can maintain healthy iron levels, thereby lowering your risk of developing cancer. 5. Enhance new blood cell production: Blood donation stimulates the production of new blood cells. After donating blood, your body’s system gets to work within 48 hours of donation with the help of bone marrow new blood cells are produced and all the lost Red Blood Cells are replaced within a span of 30 to 60 days. Hence, donating blood helps in maintaining vital health. So, donate blood regularly and help others Live Life More!!! #Life #Donate #Blood #Medical #Health

For National Kidney Month, we're highlighting one of our important causes: University of Alberta Hospital’s Alberta Kidney Care – North program. In Alberta, the prevalence of stage 3 and 4 kidney disease, the most severe stages, has increased 7.1% over the past two years. As the population grows, the need for dialysis support grows with it. Patients receiving hemodialysis in-hospital are put on a schedule of 4 hours per day, 3 days per week. By donating toward the Kidney Care program, you can help us make the transition out of the hospital a reality for hundreds of in-centre dialysis patients, support research that’s seeking to make dialysis more personalized and caring and advance efforts to make screening for kidney disease faster and more accurate. From helping to start the first hemodialysis program in Canada to supporting the first kidney transplant in Alberta and investing in one of the country’s largest home hemodialysis programs, our donors have made a difference in kidney care. https://lnkd.in/g2XaDXmj

Did you know that one blood donation can save up to three lives? Whether you’re a veteran donor or considering your first donation, the benefits are remarkable for both donors and recipients. For Donors: • Reduced Risk of Heart Disease: Research indicates that regular blood donations can lower iron levels in the blood, liver, and diminish blood viscosity, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. • Iron Level Regulation: Regular donations help prevent iron overload, which can damage organs such as the liver and heart and increase the risk of conditions like hemochromatosis. • Health Checkup: Donors receive a mini health screening before donation, including checks for blood pressure, hemoglobin levels, and pulse. This can detect potential health issues early. For Recipients: • Life-saving: Blood donation is critical for saving lives. It’s used in various medical situations, including surgeries, trauma care, cancer treatment, and managing chronic illnesses. • Support for Chronic Conditions: Patients with chronic conditions like sickle cell disease require regular blood transfusions to manage their condition and maintain a good quality of life. I personally started my blood donation journey at the beginning of the last academic year. Knowing my donation has helped save someone’s life is an incredibly rewarding feeling.
