At a Colorado Association of School Executives session today led by The Colorado Education Initiative, we read letters from students who had been referred to truancy court. One striking fact that came out of the conversation was that students in their letters almost always acknowledge - and never dismiss - the importance of going to school. But it's anxiety, fear, the struggle to catch up, and more that keeps them away. This is why we do the work we do at SchoolStatus: relieve districts of the burdens of attendance management processes, and help cultivate student/family positivity about attendance. We do this so that district teams can focus on meeting those individual students' needs and getting them back on track toward their personal academic goals. #k12 #attendance

School uniform part 2! Wow - my post this week initiated an amazing debate about school uniform… So what did I learn and what might help? I learned that opinions are incredibly diverse and there’s a strength of feeling that uniforms aren’t always necessary. There’s also been very good arguments put forward that suggest school uniform is a great leveller and helps students to focus on learning. One comment really struck me though. Hugo Marx bought in the idea that uniforms are simply out of date - this really got my mind thinking… What if uniforms were redesigned in consultation with parents and students? What if we could make them a bit ‘cool’? 😎 And in this process - what if we made them even more affordable? What if there was one for adults in schools too? What could a future school uniform look like? There’s a lot to chew on there but perhaps this is the way forward. What do you think? 🤔

I just can’t shake the need to speak on the persistent issue of school attendance. When trying to fix attendance with little kids, it has to be all about the parents, right? They are the ones waking the kids up and taking them to school so they should be the focus. Wrong. It’s still about the kids. In fact, spoiler alert, kids are the ONLY leverage point that matters and is effective to produce results. Not convinced? Check out this blog entry about how we used this principle to drastically flip attendance from 60% on time arrival to 90% in a matter of weeks. Here’s a snippet below: I got tired of calling families, scheduling meetings and running Saturday school. It was going nowhere. In fact many of the guardians blamed the kids. “They just hate getting up in the morning”, “If ____ would move faster in the morning we would be on time” or “You need to talk to ___ because I am not the reason we’re late.” This response used to infuriate me because it felt like passing the buck. Here’s what I was thinking: As the adult, it shouldn’t matter what the child wants. You should know what is best and push them to do that thing no matter what they feel. And yet, I also knew from experience that a child’s personal motivation had a very real impact on outcomes. I started to mull that over. How could we increase student motivation to be on time? How do we make 6 and 7 year olds want to get to school on time? Keep reading here: https://lnkd.in/exx-5zmi

A philanthropic legacy project in retirement focused on a circular economy. Mend It, Australia is a repair advocate and networker for Australia. It also advocates for Australian right to repair legislation.
Repair can be a small step for an individual to access a repair cafe to get their kettle fixed or for an individual to try a DIY clothing repair at home. At home, MiA is undertaking more substantial repair steps most days in 2024 and fixing something everyday, as well as telling the story of the fix. We also attend a monthly repair cafe. However, repair can be a quite a substantial leap for businesses such as ABI Electronics - Manufacturers of test, repair and reverse engineering systems, Matt Fletcher 🇬🇧 and Rom-Control Pty Ltd Certain repair skills have or are being lost but there are surprisingly lots of knowledge and skills out there. These, in MiA's opinion, are not being well supported by our leaders and decision makers. Dedicated venues and insurance coverage are barriers. As well as the relentless ongoing-focus on recycling [downcycling] and the new infrastructure push, like waste to energy plants. And where is the training at for maintenance and repair skills? Are tomorrow's electronic and electrical engineers learning board component testing and replacement skills? Or are they simply replacing whole PCBs with new ones? Danny has worked alongside a couple of electrical engineers who do not know how to change a faulty lamp cord. MiA is keen for university campuses to establish repair cafes and have left a comment on Monash University's video about its plan for net zero precincts. It appears that the municipality of Monash does not have a repair cafe. It would therefore be great if a repair cafe could be established at the university. Repair, don't waste!
