#meettheteam Name: Gavin Welch Role: Branch Manager How long have you been with Kent Blaxill? 7 weeks, however I have been with G&S/IBMG for 6 years over different branches and roles. Describe your role? Day to day running of the business from the sales to leading the team. Best part of the job: Dealing with people, whether it be colleagues or customers. I’ve always been outgoing and talk far to much so sales is something that suits me and something I love. What is an achievement you are proud of? Being a Dad. Nothing will ever beat that. What is a small thing that makes your job easier/better? I wouldn’t say there is any small things as such but the team around me currently. They work in a way that has allowed me to come in and try and push us forward without any push backs. What was your first job? I was a useless labourer for my Dad who was a carpenter. Mainly tasked with cleaning and running to get lunch. I apparently couldn’t always even get that right! If you had to enter a talent show, what would be your act? Singing 2 become one by the spice girls. What is your biggest fashion regret? With a face like mine there I can’t ever regret anything I wear. There’s one thing Car Sales taught me that I will always be grateful for… Being able to take rejection, criticism (or dogs abuse 😅), failure and set-backs but keep putting one foot in front of the other. People Buy YOU! #Carmax was the first “real job” I had when I moved to the US. Before working there, I worked part-time at a plus-sized store for women making $8.25 an hour. When I started working at CarMax, in two years I was able to buy my first house. I made a lot of money! As one of the top 3 salespeople, I enjoyed all the perks including driving different cars, auto insurance, going to Vegas with all expenses paid each year, and many others. In the 4 years I worked there, I made the company over $30 million! Read that again! I was a beast in sales. Not bragging but it is what it is. And the crazy thing is, I had no previous sales experience. However, I was determined to learn everything I could and to be my best. I got that resilience from overcoming childhood trauma. I NEVER pushed or forced anyone to buy anything. What I did was sell myself first! My personality, my honesty, and my attention to detail. I actively listened and made it about them because I truly cared. After four years of working for #Carmax, I quit during the pandemic to go full-time into my business. What I’ve learned from working there and in my 4 years of being in my business, is that people buy YOU. If they don’t like you, know you or trust you, they eint buying quack 😂. So, be YOU! Be your authentic self and watch what will happen in your life and/or business.

Over the last few Sundays I've been doing car boot sales to try to de-clutter. They are hectic and boring in different measures. When you first get there the dealers are round your car like seagulls round a dropped bag of chips. Then there's a lull, time for a coffee and a bacon bap. I have been amazed by some of the stuff that sold and what didn't. One person's tat is another person's treasure. It's the same in recruitment. Just because someone wasn't all singing, all dancing at their last company doesn't mean they won't shine in yours. Maybe they weren't inspired, maybe they had circumstances that the company wouldn't be flexible over. It's the same as that kitchen gadget you never got to grips with, but somebody else loves! Early in 2023, I came to an interesting realization: salespeople are dogs. Let me explain. When it comes to gifts, I like to provide experiences rather than just things. So last winter, I took my family on a dog sled adventure. I'm not champion musher, so I sat back and let the professionals do their magic. Watching how the dogs, and the human steering the sled, worked together was super inspiring and made me reflect on teamwork. During a sledding trip, it's not just about the dog up front leading the pack, or the ones who are the strongest. Every dog on the sled team has its place where it thrives and serves the ultimate goal—to win the race! The same should go for a sales team. To do solution sales, the key is to be authentically yourself. And to have an effective sales team, you need to know yourself enough to do what you do best. Not everyone needs to be the superstar. A well put-together team includes dogs—or salespeople—of all shapes and sizes. As long as they're in the right place, they all have something to contribute to the team's success.
