I know…we’ve been conditioned to shrink. We shrink to meet someone else’s expectations or fit in their box. We shrink because we don’t want to be perceived as angry. We shrink because we don’t want to be perceived as “too much.” We shrink because we learned it as a little girl. We are overqualified but still made to feel that we are not enough. So, our menopausal symptoms can cause us to shrink even more when we are facing embarrassment, self-doubt or shame. Guess what? Midlife, Menopause and beyond is your opportunity to TAKE UP SPACE. You no longer have to shrink if you take the time to Know, Like and Trust You in this season of your life…flaws and all. You no longer have to shrink if you know that the only person who defines who you are and your value is YOU. You no longer have to shrink if you believe that your gifts are needed to change the world….you were created to be a blessing to someone. You no longer have to shrink if you know that your menopausal symptoms or midlife challenges were made to shape you into the next version of you, not break you. And how do you take up space when you feel like midlife challenges or circumstances are holding you back from your dreams? Expand the relationship you have with yourself. Expand the relationship you have with your brain. Expand the relationship you have with your body. Menopause is a time for change … … on so many levels. Many women make big decisions on the direction of their life, based on what they want to be doing and who they want to be doing it with. It’s extremely common to hear that women have decided to change their career, to focus on something that’s important to them. Equally many set their sights on senior roles and make the push towards them. After all there are nearly two decades of career left – for most – at the point they start experiencing their symptoms. If you are changing direction, rather than throw the metaphorical baby out with the bath water, it’s time to be hard nosed about things - too many metaphors? For most menopause occurs at the point we are at our most valuable to our employer, we are also entering the period when we are earning the most. Which means we have the greatest potential to pay off our mortgage, save and very importantly contribute to our pension. None of these points are sexy, but they are bl00dy critical. At this juncture, it is vital you think about your immediate and long-term financial wellbeing. Do some planning, think things through and start the process of change. If you are making a change based on struggling in the workplace, focus on accessing the support you need to enable you to transition in a place of strength, not desperation. The latter is the death knell to ideas. I hate to state the obvious but working for yourself is equally difficult and challenging to being a corporate bunny. The challenges are different and you will need to be performing at your best or near it, at things you may not have considered. It is not about drinking pina coladas at 4.30 in the afternoon, at least not at first anyway. Dip your toe and see if your business idea can sustain itself – and you – before you make the leap. You may need to some tweaks or adjustments. Having said all of this, post-menopausal women are extraordinary! We can achieve incredible things, more so than at any point in our lives. Which means: · Do your planning · Sort out the money · Seek support · Manage your symptoms · Prepare · Feel in control of your menopause experience · Have confidence in yourself · Try things out · Launch Good luck! #LinkedInNewsEurope #worldmenopauseday #moneymatters

Two million Australians have recently experienced menopause, with around 80,000 transitioning to postmenopause annually. However, menopause is frequently misdiagnosed as a mental health issue, resulting in the inadequate management of symptoms. In July, a survey of our HESTA member community revealed that when it comes to workforce participation, 58% of members were impacted by their menopausal symptoms. Women in mid-life are often at the peak of their careers with rich experience behind them – and the potential to remain in the workforce for another 20 to 30 years. Our mission is to empower women to boost their retirement savings while staying active in their careers. Recently, we partnered with the University of Melbourne and AIA Australia to research the experiences of women going through menopause. Research helps inform our advocacy for more timely and effective medical interventions to mitigate the effects on mid-life women and their retirement. Our recent webinar with AIA, featuring guest speakers Dr Marita Long and Lauren Reynolds helped raise awareness of and educate employers about mid-life health and wellbeing, including strategies for supporting workers affected to enable better staff retention and job satisfaction. #HESTASuper #HESTAImpact #MenopauseAwareness

Chief Strategy & Talent Officer at Standard Chartered | Board member & Non Executive Director | Author of the book 'The Skills-Powered Organization'
As we mark World Menopause Day, I have been reflecting on our journey at Standard Chartered. We started four years ago with a first of its kind research in partnership with the Financial Services Skills Commission to explore the impact of the menopause on career progression and talent retention in the financial services sector in the UK. The findings were truly sobering - highlighting that almost a quarter of menopausal women were more likely to leave the workforce before retirement and a similar number were deciding to not take on larger roles. A year on when we surveyed the participating firms, it was great to see that active progress was being made in legitimising the menopause as a workplace issue through defined policies, specialised trainings and introduction of employee support systems and networks. I am proud of the leadership position we have taken in the Bank - not just building awareness of this issue in the industry but making strong strides to drive greater inclusion within our own firm. In addition to policies like paid leave for treatment, workspace adjustments and access to menopause counselling; we have expanded medical benefits to provide comprehensive coverage for menopause related treatments to all our colleagues and their partners. But I am proudest that we have been able to surface the conversation amongst our workforce and equip our People Leaders and colleagues to drive much greater awareness on the topic and break societal taboos. So, it continues to be humbling each time colleagues share their stories - thank you Emma Screen for sharing yours 👇 While the work around the menopause began with focus on the intersectionality between gender and generation, I am glad that we continue to push the boundaries on the agenda by exploring the intersectionality between gender and ethnicity as well as disability – and the impact that all of this has on the lived experience of our people and eventually on our talent and leadership pipelines. #inclusion #menopauseawareness #worldmenopauseday https://lnkd.in/ek5EG2zw
