During a recent event planning meeting, a suggestion to include a speaker from the LGBT community sparked a concerning response: "Sounds great, but what about the comfort of other speakers?" This highlights a crucial concept: unconscious bias. As we celebrate #DisabilityPride Month on the heels of June's #PrideMonth, it's a timely reminder that unconscious bias can manifest in various ways, impacting who we choose to amplify. Communication plays a powerful role in dismantling these biases. Today is National Coming Out Day – a day to celebrate living authentically and to honour the courage of those in the LGBTQ+ community who have shared their truth. However, while many of us celebrate this day, we must also recognize that in some parts of the world, coming out is still unsafe. For many, revealing their true selves can lead to rejection, discrimination, or even violence. In over 60 countries, LGBTQ+ people face legal and social barriers that make living openly a life-threatening decision. National Coming Out Day serves as a reminder of the progress we’ve made, but also highlights the work that remains. As allies and members of the LGBTQ+ community, we must continue to support and fight for the rights of those who cannot safely come out. Everyone deserves the right to live openly, free from fear and oppression. June is Pride Month! Pride Month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and their contributions to society, as well as to reflect on the history of their struggle for civil rights and equality. It typically features various events such as parades, festivals, concerts, and educational activities. Here's a look at how the various generations identify as LGBTQ+: 🌈 28% of Gen Z adults (ages 18-25) identify as LGBTQ+: 🌈 16% of millennials identify as LGBTQ+: 🌈 7% of Generation X identify as LGBTQ+; 🌈 4% of baby boomers identify as LGBTQ+; and 🌈 4% of the Silent Generation identify as LGBTQ+. Pride Month is a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work still needed to achieve true equality for all. It is a time for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. 🌈 Happy Pride Month! 🏠 While significant strides have been made to support those who identify as LGBTQ+, youth are still disproportionately unhoused compared to their heterosexual, cisgender peers. In addition to increased housing insecurity of LGBTQ+ youth, LGBTQ+ adults may face housing discrimination, such as being charged higher rents, being shown fewer units, and getting harassed when trying to seek supportive services. Intersecting identities, such as race and sex, create even greater gaps in housing discrimination. 📌 Public housing authorities (PHAs) have an obligation to promote fair housing and can make a difference in the lives of their residents. By centering equity, PHAs may improve outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals.
