Last week I caught up with a stellar Vice President of Sales at a life science tools company, managing a team of seasoned North American sales reps. "We've had the best quarter to date" - I'll be honest. I wasn't expecting to hear this 😅 We all know pharma and biotech have seen a steady decline in their clinical trial programmes and development pipelines, which in turn has led to layoffs and a consolidation process. Reduced clinical or pre-clinincal trials and experiments, mean the use of the high-throughput analysis and capital equipment reduces, and consequently re-occuring run rates of reagents and consumables too. But, what is on the up? Academic research and innovation grants - therefore life science tool providers must tailor their value-add for this traditionally viewed 'low ticket' segment, just like this sales leader did. I help scientists get into sales and business development (BD). But aren’t sales and BD the same?  And as a scientist, which one should I be aiming for? Let’s dig into these below! 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 is concerned with identifying, qualifying, and closing leads (making sales). These sales relationships can be infrequent - such as with selling big, expensive capital equipment. Or they can be longer term, repeat order relationships - such as with consumables or software subscriptions. 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬: These roles (especially smaller ticket items or dealing with repeat customers) are typically great entry points for scientists. Depending on the seniority and responsibility, you don’t need much sales experience! 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (BD) reps focus on longer term partnerships and contracts. These roles are more typical in the services sector (think CRO or CDMO). However, sales reps involved in multi-million dollar capital equipment sales could be considered BD reps too. Why both? Because both services and higher ticket items: 1) Have a lot of dollars at stake (Think multi-million) 2) Don’t close overnight or on one phone call (Think 6->12->18 month+ sales process involving dozens of people) 3)Take a lot of time and effort to deliver   -> big, expensive, and complicated equipment usually has (unsurprisingly) big, expensive, and complicated installation and qualification requirements -> CRO and CDMO services can take years and potentially hundreds of people to fully deliver 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Most BD reps I know (especially those without a PhD*) cut their teeth in sales before moving into BD. *I mention this because you can go directly into BD without much sales experience BUT (1) you need to be super technically qualified (think PhD, Post-Doc, or industry experience) and (2) said BD role needs to line up DIRECTLY with your technical experience For example: Post-doc or industry experience in cell therapy -> Cell Therapy CDMO Business Development role What do you think?
