We'd like to thank Crain's Detroit Business for publishing this impactful op-ed on Michigan's #education system written by our President and CEO, Ronald E. Hall, and 42 North Partners, LLC founder, Mike Jandernoa. Both are executive committee members on the Business Leaders for Michigan board. Here's a preview of the editorial: "Our K-12 public education system is not doing right by our kids. The crux of this crisis is unfolding in our own backyards. A new analysis comparing #Michigan public school district performance against peer districts in top-performing states shows that nearly every district isn’t keeping up with the competition. From the Upper Peninsula to the southern corners of the state, and from suburbs to rural communities, Michigan students are trailing their peers. Without a strong educational foundation, Michigan will continue to struggle to grow, and our children will lose out on what we all want most for them — opportunity." We know first-hand what is most important and needed for students who look like us: in our classrooms, in our policies, and in our communities. EdLoC member, 2023 Boulder Fund Recipient, and CEO and Founder of Diversity in Leadership Institute Dr. Laura M. recently shared a piece on EdSource advocating for continued investment in teacher diversity recruitment and retention. Amid fiscal challenges in California's education system, the need for diverse representation in classrooms remains paramount. Research shows students thrive when taught by educators who reflect their backgrounds. It's time for school districts to prioritize teacher diversity to ensure all students feel seen and supported. As we commend the local and state initiatives driving teacher diversity, transparency, and community engagement remain crucial for sustained progress. Fiscal uncertainties shouldn't deter leaders from upholding commitments to teacher diversity. Continued investment in these efforts is vital for building a brighter future for California's diverse student population. Morgan Park Academy remains the top school in Chicago’s Southland area, one of the best in the state, and is among 2.5% of schools nationwide to merit an overall A+ grade, according to an annual third-party report released last week. MPA ranked No. 8 among Illinois K-12 private schools and No. 13 among the state’s private high schools. On diversity, long a strong suit, the Academy again earned the highest marks, ranking 16th in the state among most diverse private high schools. The report ranks schools based on a combination of data from the U.S. Department of Education and millions of school reviews and parent and student surveys. "Statistics and rankings aren't everything," Head of School Mercedes Z. Sheppard said. "But certainly, it's wonderful for our amazing teachers and our school community as a whole to receive this outside validation, and especially, to see such positive reviews from MPA families."
