In their own words 💔 Kids in the ‘alternative care arrangement’ model of government care moved from ‘cage to cage’ in cheap, cockroach infested motels with little to no support or supervision. The money is invested in the crisis end of the system, not in supporting families to stay together or in carers to provide home-based care and support. Carers receive on average $15K per annum to support a child or young person in their home - families receive even less on supports to remain together. Yet it costs up to (and sometimes more than) $1million per child per annum in this broken model of care? Where is the logic in this? Can we even call it ‘care’? My heart breaks for our society; for our kids; for our future. And the most alarming thing of all - this is not new information. It has been like this for a very long time 💔 #ahomeforeverychild #weneedtodobetter #advocacy #support
‘Moving from cage to cage: An interim report of the Special Inquiry into children and young people in alternative care arrangements’ by the NSW Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP) was released a few days ago. It is a vital look into what it is like for children to be housed in motels with shift workers instead of in a family home. Children need family and when they can't live with them, they need to be cared for in an alternative family-home. No child should have to keep their bags packed, be isolated, miss school for two years or spend their childhood in distress. Change is needed immediately. Costs are estimated at $965,000 per child in this emergency style accommodation compared to the $15,000 provided to a Foster / Kin carer to support the child in their home... the maths and outcomes speak for themselves. I spoke with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Drive about the findings: https://lnkd.in/gvifDnwe #children #youngpeople #youth #childrensrights #permanency #home #foster #adopt #homelessness Adopt Change

One of the most important things we can teach our children is that failing is okay - everybody experiences it. Letting children experience independence lets them fail. But it makes them build the confidence that they know it’s okay. #LetGrow is here to provide parents with resources to help foster confidence and independence in our nation's children. https://ow.ly/yej250R0Kxa #ChildDevelopment #ChildIndependence

I am a passionate believer in play - for children, for youth, - for all of us. I would argue that during childhood and adolescent play is probably needed more than ever before, - both to give children a break, but also to ensure that we give them the opportunity to make the world around them meaningful through play. We see an unpresedented mental health crisis among children and adolescent, which we need to act on. Thus, I believe it is on us - the adults to start listening, to better understand - and to change our ways, so we can meet children and adolescents where, how, and when the need us. Are you ready to become a fierce human rights defender of children's rights? - Reach out to hear more, how The Child and Youth Friendly Governance Project can help children and young people have an active voice in your decision-making processes. Personally, I do not think we can afford not to do this!
At this week's Roundtable Discussion on the Power of Play, children and young people from three different continents presented their Call to Action with concrete recommendations to governments, the UN, civil society organisations, schools, caregivers, and corporations on how they can advance children’s right to play. The Call to Action, which has been informed by local focus group discussions and online consultations with over 10,000 children and young people worldwide, emphasises the importance of play to children's well-being and development. Children and young people stress that play is a right for all children and emphasise the importance of developing play solutions in collaboration with children themselves, particularly those with special needs. Stay tuned as we post recommendations from the Call to Action over the coming weeks! The global consultations with the children and young people have been supported by the Child and Youth Friendly Governance Project in collaboration with BRAC, The Concerned for Working Children, Eurochild, Save the Children International, the Government of Sierra Leone, International Play Association (IPA World), and Play in Education, Development, and Learning (PEDAL) at the University of Cambridge. The strictest safeguarding standards have been applied throughout the process. #PowerofPlay #ChildRights #ChildandYouthFriendlyGovernance

One week to go! It can be nice not to have to rush in the mornings when school is out, but summer can also be a very challenging time for many SEND families. Many of us feel isolated or are unsure of where to go with all of our children when one or more has SEND needs. As parents, we can struggle too. In this session, we will inform you about the activities available in your area, how to apply for Short Breaks, and who is open and available to help when you need it. Online safety can be a real concern for our children and young people, so we have Ellen from NSPCC with us to provide advice. For most of us, taking care of our children is a priority we all share. And when it comes to child support, ensuring that the arrangement genuinely benefits the kids who are involved is huge. As a lawyer, it's amazing to see so many of these agreements play out with a clear focus on fostering a stable and equitable environment for these children. This approach not only supports the child’s development but also upholds a sense of fairness and responsibility that is crucial in a family dynamic. Whether it’s ensuring they have the same comforts in both homes or discussing their needs without conflict, how have you tried to put your kids first in these decisions? #Parenting #ChildSupport #FamilyFirst

Come learn about the five characteristics of strong families and how to promote them!
Join us Monday to Tuesday, June 10th-11th at Northeast Delta Dental for the Strengthening Families Framework: Bringing the Protective Factors to Life. Every family has its strengths, and all families can thrive when these strengths, called protective factors, are fostered in their lives and communities. Professionals who work with children and families can promote protective factors that support parents, strengthen families, and boost children’s development. There are five family strengths, known as protective factors, and when they are present and robust, families thrive, children grow, and communities flourish. The Strengthening Families Protective Factors Framework® identifies these five protective factors and everyday actions that anyone whose work touches parents can take to promote them in families. Are you prepared to lead the way in fostering child safety and wellbeing? Our work is grounded in the 10 National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. These principles have been endorsed by the Prime Minister and state and territory First Ministers, aiming to provide a nationally consistent approach to fostering child safety and wellbeing. While the National Principles are not mandatory, organisations that implement them demonstrate leadership and commitment to child safety and wellbeing. These organisations will become 'organisations of choice', instilling confidence in children, young people, families, and communities that they provide safe environments where children's rights, needs, and interests are met.
