As a recruiter, I had countless conversations with doctors with one thing in common. Their desire for flexibility. But what does that really mean? Meet Dr Smith A passionate medical professional. Beyond hospital shifts, they yearned for travel and adventure. Medicine was the key. Locum work took Dr Smith everywhere—from busy NHS wards to serene villages and coastal towns. Imagine scrubs neatly packed alongside, hiking boots and a stethoscope. Locuming wasn’t just about medicine. It was about sipping coffee on Edinburgh’s cobblestone streets, hiking in the Peak District, and catching sea breezes before a shift. Flexibility meant more than rotas, it was about balance and embracing life. Locum work connected Dr Smith with fellow doctors across the UK. They shared stories and travel tips. Flexibility became a passport to improve lives all over the UK, including Dr Smith’s. It's interesting to read that despite my role change three years ago, the same driver persists amongst healthcare professionals, a strong desire for flexibility. 📩 Curious? ⚡This week was World Health Worker Week. "There is no health without health workers" - Dr Tedros ⚠️There is a healthcare workforce crisis with an expected shortfall of 10 million healthcare workers globally by 2030. Different international organizations say that we must invest in healthcare workers. What does this mean? 🪷Support students that are interested in health careers. Make health careers visible and accessible. 🙏 Treat healthcare workers with respect and do not expose them to violence or abuse. 💵 Pay them appropriately for their time and expertise. ⚠️ Address increased workloads by supporting healthcare workers in setting sustainable workload limits to reduce harm and improve retention. ❤️🩹 Support their mental health and wellbeing so that they can do the same for their communities. 💡 Primary care needs to be valued so that more health workers see this as a viable career option. We need more community based healthcare. ✨ Recognize that a healthy population builds a healthy economy and a prosperous nation. 👂Listen to healthcare workers as they often have insights into solutions that can improve local health systems. Build culture where innovation is supported and valued. 🌱 Include them in the process of health workforce strategy development and health policy development. 🗝️ Look beyond health systems to the social determinants of health to address upstream issues. Prevention is better than treatment. Addressing the health-related social needs (HRSNs) of individuals is something we work passionately toward every day, engaging with health plan members, building trust, and identifying needs that we can then help solve. In a recent Forbes article, a contributing writer outlines eleven ways to move the needle on HRSNs, many of which are among the activities we undertake on behalf of our health plan partners. These include helping members find and arrange transportation for healthcare needs like attending doctor's appointments; addressing food insecurity through connections to local resources; and, building partnerships with community-based organizations that enable health plans and local resources to work together effectively — then making sure that members received the help they needed. Straight talk from former SE Health CEO, Shirlee Sharkey, on tackling the persistent challenge of hallway healthcare. In this 2019 Longwoods Publishing essay, she argues there are three main ways to address it: ➡️ Shorten hospital stays by discharging people faster; ➡️ Avoid hospital deconditioning, especially among frail older adults; and ➡️ The BIG opportunity – keep people out of hospital in the first place. Five years later, with the growth of integrated and transitional care partnerships, health systems across Canada are starting to make progress on the first two -- but there is still much work ahead to build robust community-based systems of care that will unlock the big opportunity.
